Secular approach

12:08pm Wednesday 3rd September 2008

Darwin's theory of evolution is an established scientific fact, yet despite this, creationism (and its Trojan horse, intelligent design) can be taught in British schools, and Darwin’s work can be censored on the basis of just one religious complaint (“Darwin censored”, The Argus, August 30).

Next year marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin’s On The Origin Of Species. A more secular approach to education would be a fine way to commemorate it.

As Robert Ingersoll (1833-99) lamented: “Can there be methodist mathematics, catholic astronomy, presbyterian geology, baptist biology or episcopal botany? Why, then, should a sectarian college exist?

Only that which somebody knows should be taught in our schools. We should not collect taxes to pay people for guessing.”
