Having just read the report Sussex University Challenged, produced by student group Violence Free Science, I must agree with David Hammond (Letters, February 13) that there can be no justification for these experiments.

Not only are they unlikely to give results relevant to humans but they risk breaking the Home Office's own regulations under the Animals Scientific Procedures Act, which states that alternatives to animals must be used where available.

The well researched report reveals how these experiments have been taking place over many years with lucrative grants going to researchers.

It also documents the alternatives available.

The two highly qualified scientists who assisted with this report can't just be dismissed out of hand.

How Sussex University can continue to abuse animals for research into alcohol and obesity, among others, is a scandal.
