Can I bring all the people who have written letters regarding another bank holiday back to the real world (Letters, May 1, 5 and 6). Taking it step-by-step, let's ask the following questions.

Who is going to foot the bill for the lost productivity in industry? Obviously the consumer.

Are people in favour of another bank holiday going to forsake a day's pay to get yet another holiday or do they expect their employers to pay for it, who in turn will pass the costs on to the consumer?

The majority of people already get an average of more than three weeks paid holiday plus bank holidays off.

Do they ever think of people like myself who are self-employed and don't get paid for taking these days off or even taking annual holidays. Some of us also work ten to 12 hours a day.

If a day is to be recognised as a holiday in honour of our patron saint St George - something I have no objection to - then let's do it. But let's cut out one of the meaningless bank holidays we have in May.
