Ban the lady boys
I would like to endorse wholeheartedly
the views of Jean Calder
on the subject of the Lady Boys of
Bangkok (The Argus, May 3). I too
object to my city being characterised
by events like this. The vast majority
of people in Brighton are members
of traditional-style families,
whose children, they feel, should be
allowed to grow up free from the
sexualisation of their lives.
Rather than turn up and gape at
the lady boys, we should feel sorry for them.
The most shocking thing for me
is that these boys may have had
hormone treatment from a prepubescent
age and before they were
of an age to consent. For Brighton
and Hove City Council to endorse
such exploitation of children is absolutely hideous.
The lady boys, seemingly, seek to
display a stereotype of femininity.
Not all women want to display themselves
in a sexually provocative way
before men, neither are they all
obsessed by fashion, beauty, makeup
and sex. It would seem that this
show seeks to perpetuate this lie
about the lives of women. In a
society which is already highly
sexualised, our authorities should
behave responsibly and not add fuel
to the fire. I would ask the council to
make sure that it bans this show
from ever appearing in Brighton
again.
