HAVE you ever imagined yourself playing one of the warring gangsters in Graham Greene’s dark vision of pre-war Brighton?

You’re in luck.

A filmmaker is shooting a scene-for-scene remake of the original Brighton Rock film, released in 1947 and starring Richard Attenborough.

Richard DeDomenici has made low-budget reproductions of many famous films in the locations they were shot. Brighton Rock is his next project, following on from “cinematic forgeries” [in his words] of Dawn of the Dead, Trainspotting and Quantum of Solace.

Mr DeDomenici will seek volunteers to act and be crew members in his creation, although details are as yet undisclosed. The completed film will be screened at the University of Sussex’s Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts on November 24.

The filmmaker has toured his unique project around the world including spells at The National Theatre and The Sydney Festival. He couldn’t resist tackling Brighton Rock after he was commissioned by Laura McDermott, artistic director at ACCA.

He said: “Once I double-checked she wasn’t referring to the 2010 remake [starring Sam Riley], I readily agreed – especially as it’s the anniversary of the 1947 original this year.”

Mr DeDomenici added that Brighton’s landmarks lend themselves to cinema.

“There are some great filming locations all through Brighton; from the station, through The Lanes and down to the pier.

“All these places still look pretty similar to their appearance in the original movie and therefore should look great on film.”

Brighton Rock: Redux is the first of Mr DeDomenici’s films to be shot in black and white.

He said anyone can take part and that he often casts “against type” – such as his forthcoming all-female Redux of Withnail and I.

The filmmaker added that his motivation with the Redux project was to “make cinema as democratic as possible”.

He added: “For those lucky enough to take part, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to taste fame; for those who simply watch, it’s a remarkable re-imaging of beloved films”.
