A SHOE shop is collecting boots and other items of clothing to be donated to refugees in Calais to keep them warm this winter.

Independent footwear store Mo Brog, in Union Street, Brighton, is collecting for Help Refugees, a charity which will be distributing the items around the Calais area.

The shop started the appeal by donating 15 pairs of new boots off its shelves, which will be delivered to refugees along with the public donations in the next couple of weeks.

Mary Stuart, 58, owner of Mo Brog, said: “Our Government isn’t doing enough so we have to do something to help.

“One small donation can make a huge difference, even if it is just a pair of boots.

“I think it is easy for other shops to do the same or similar types of collection.

“Being in central Brighton, it makes a great drop-off point for donations.

“I would say we have had about 50 or so pairs of boots donated so far.

“Any warm layers, socks and jackets or hoodies are being accepted as well.

“I have had a very good response from customers, neighbours and friends who all see the importance of helping these people.”

The shop is mainly collecting for men and women who are currently living outdoors in Calais as there is already a refuge set up to help children living there.

Ms Stuart is appealing for people to donate men’s winter-proof boots – sizes seven to nine are most in demand – preferably new or used but in good condition.

Since the demolition of the “Jungle” in Calais, refugees continue to arrive in the town in their hundreds.

With close to one thousand refugees still thought to be living in the area, Help refugees only had 63 pairs of boots in their stores before launching the campaign to collect more.

Ms Stuart said: “A volunteer doctor working there saw around 50 cases of trench foot in just two days. The crisis has not gone away.

“I think it amazing what Help Refugees are doing. They are collecting large amounts and distributing the items fairly.

“The work they do on the ground is great.

“Hopefully we will be inundated and I will have a car full to take to Calais for them to be distributed.”
