A SCENIC plane flight is among more than 500 prizes available in a £1-per-ticket raffle in aid of the Save Madeira Terrace campaign.

Other valuable gifts up for grabs include a two-night stay in the Old Ship Hotel, £100 off dinner at luxury seafood restaurant Riddle & Finns, and free massages.

Event organiser Jax Atkins told The Argus donations continue to pour in for what is being billed as the biggest raffle in the history of the city.

“Initially I said we’d have ‘hundreds’ of prizes but I thought, ‘goodness that means we need at least 200’.

“But we’re up to 521 and people are still emailing me. It’s absolutely brilliant”

The crowdfunding campaign to kick-start the restoration of Madeira Terrace has now hit 73 per cent of its target with 17 days to go.

If it does not reach its £430,000 target by November 30, none of those who have pledged money will be charged.

A recent pledge of £15,000 by local firm Landsec has boosted the fund to almost £310,000 while a groundswell of public support has seen the campaign attract more than 1,500 backers.

Residents Jax Atkins and Derek Wright, who are the force behind the increasingly popular raffle, are working tirelessly to collect prizes and sell tickets with the aim of raising £20,000.

Mr Wright said: “I adore Brighton and am interested in its history. When the Madeira Terrace rescue plan was launched by the council, I pledged my support but also wanted to do something practical.

“Jax organised a clean-up on Madeira Drive and once I’d heard about her idea to hold a raffle, decided it was something I could get behind.”

Neighbours, Christopher Goss and Russell Miller are also helping galvanise the community and have been lobbying local businesses, leafleting and using social media as well as sending hundreds of e-mails to try and attract pledges.

Howard Barden, head of VisitBrighton said: “Support for the terraces to be restored is evident and we’re now hoping to see businesses step up with some larger pledges .”
