POLICE investigating a fatal crash are appealing for the driver of a small blue car to come forward.

A 22-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Uckfield, died when a white Peugeot Boxer van hit a tree in Eastbourne Road at Ridgewood at 4.51pm on Sunday.

The van was travelling south.

PC Stuart Watson said: “The driver of a small blue car that was seen close to the collision may have information which could help us with the investigation.

“If you are the driver of this vehicle or know the driver, please contact us.”

The crash happened close to where campaigners have called for a reduction in the speed limit.

Councillor Ian Smith, of Uckfield Town Council, spearheaded the campaign.

He said: “It’s really, really sad – terribly sad.

“By allowing cars to go up from 30mph to 40mph in a residential area and then into a national speed limit zone they are encouraging people to build up their speed.”

The families of the victims have been informed although their identities have not been released.

Anyone with information should email police at collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting Operation Eastern.
