THE 2018 Newhaven Community Awards were presented at the annual Town Meeting held at the Hillcrest Community Centre.

There was a good turnout for the meeting and the audience heard some presentations from a number of community groups interspersed amongst the awards presentations.

The Volunteer Award was won by Barbara Tapp who has volunteered with the 2nd Denton & South Heighton Scout Group for more than 30 years.

The award was sponsored by Fludes Carpets.

There were so many wonderful nominations for the Unsung Hero award that the judging panel found it impossible to decide on one winner and decided to award two prizes.

Vicky Shearman received her award from James Batchelor of Ingenio Technologies, who sponsored the award.

Vicky volunteers with SCDA, including for its Foodbank, leading health walks, cooking classes for women learning English and other events for the refugee and migrant community in Newhaven.

The other Unsung Hero award was won by Roo Allen.

Roo and his young daughter Willow are members of the public who walk the streets of Newhaven in their spare time picking up other people’s litter.

Martin Garry won the Achiever Award for his outstanding leadership work carried out on a voluntary basis for Newhaven Football Club.

This award was sponsored by Wave Leisure.

The overall winner of the Newhaven Community Award, chosen from the nominees from all three categories, was Bob Evans.

Bob is well known in the town, having run a shop in the town centre as well as volunteering with the scouts for more than 20 years and driving a CTLA bus.

This award was sponsored by the Newhaven Chamber of Commerce.
