CRASHES, poor driving conditions and flooded roads brought parts of the county’s transport networks to a standstill last night.

Emergency services were dealing with flooding and trees coming down. However, few problems were caused by the snow.

Sussex Police closed part of the A27 at Clapham, near Worthing, for two hours as the westbound carriageway had flooded and was impassable.

A force spokeswoman said 10 trees had fallen across the county Two Brighton and Hove buses crashed in North Street, Brighton, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Emergency services responded to the accident at 5.53pm. There were no serious injuries but one person was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Bus passengers heading to Seaford had to get off at Denton last night as ice east of the town meant buses had to go via the A27 to Eastbourne.

Rail replacement buses were still heading to Seaford but there were some angry scenes when some passengers were refused travel using their bus tickets.

Compass Travel suspended its 37 service in Brighton as snow was making driving conditions dangerous on the hills.

Passengers on Southern Railway services also faced delays as services were cancelled.

Lines between Lewes and Eastbourne were blocked after the track at Berwick flooded.

Brighton and Hove City Council sent gritters on to the roads. It also opened its severe weather shelter for rough sleepers in response to the weather warning and the reducing temperatures.

A yellow warning for ice was in place for this morning.

Met Office forecaster Emma Sharples said: "There's quite a lot of wintry weather at the moment.

"The system working its way across the south will have cleared out of the way leaving some snow and icy patches as we go through tomorrow morning.

"It will be quite windy and blustery with further wintry showers and a cold feel with a biting north wind."
