MOTORWAY traffic was brought to a standstill following a serious accident.
Sussex Police closed the M23 in both directions after a Smart car hit the central barrier near Pease Pottage at 8.15am on Friday.
The 22-year-old male driver was believed to have sustained serious injuries but after initially being alerted to attend the crew of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance was stood down.
The man was taken to St George's Hospital in south London where he was seen for injuries to his head and legs.
It is understood that he was discharged from there later the same day.
The southbound carriageway and two lanes northbound were re-opened at around 9am in order to disperse a heavy build-up of traffic.
