A BRAINY sixth former has won a prestigious engineering scholarship.

Christ’s Hospital sixth former Marvelous Jibogu, aged 16, has been selected to win an Arkwright Scholarship - a national programme that inspires and nurtures high achieving school-age students to be the country’s future leaders in engineering.

Marvelous, who received his certificate, said: “I feel that the Arkwright Scholarships are an excellent platform for achievement.

“I am grateful to my sponsors, the Sue Thomson Foundation and CH’s Engineers Support Fund, and those who supported me along the way during the application process.”

The student emphasised that he would like to specialise in computer science, and plans to study it at university in a year and a half’s time.

He said: “I feel that computer science is the purest form of engineering and is versatile enough to be used in different scenarios to solve various world problems.

“It can be used in eradicating major health issues or ensuring clean water for all people.

“Being awarded an Arkwright Scholarship is the first step towards making this dream a possibility, and I am looking forward to using the scholarship to further my studies and experiences in computer science for the next two years.”

According to the school, a growing number of girls and boys from Christ’s Hospital go on to study engineering.

Last year’s leavers are now reading mechanical engineering, industrial design and applied software engineering at bachelor degree level.

Carol Blackwell, press officer, said: “Many of these pupils studied design and technology whilst at school – both the A level and IB Diploma course are offered.

“The department has facilities that would be the envy of a university and is not only geared to equip pupils with practical skills, turning out useful and imaginatively designed products and pieces of furniture, but also to help solve the manufacturing and engineering challenges of the future.”

Christ’s Hospital is an independent day and boarding school located in Southwater, south of Horsham in West Sussex. It is a charity school whose fees are calculated on a means test.
