Veterans boo civic leader

A councillor has been accused of trying to "hijack" a war veterans' reunion dinner to gain votes in this week's local elections.

Lewes District Council chairwoman Marina Pepper was booed off stage at the Royal Sussex Regimental Association's annual reunion dinner on Saturday.

More than 300 people packed into Lewes Town Hall for the event, during which Coun Pepper launched into a tirade against sending soldiers to an "illegal war".

Murmurs of discontent soon turned into heckles and booing before Coun Pepper, who was invited in her civic role as council chairwoman, left the stage and returned to her seat.

One former serviceman at the dinner said: "I couldn't believe what I was hearing. She got on to her feet in front of all these proud war veterans and started going on about how we shouldn't be in Iraq.

It's the last thing anyone wanted to hear.

"It started off as a bit of muttering under people's breaths then escalated into boos and full-blown heckling.

"There were roars of disgust all round. There was so much noise that eventually she had to sit down.

"I don't think it's right that she tried to hijack the dinner for a political purpose, especially in election week."

Bill Wood, secretary of the association's Brighton branch, said: "I think she just slightly misjudged her audience to be honest. Most of the people there know what it is like to serve on the front line, and they can see through something when it is politically motivated.

"She was implying that people should get out and vote on Thursday, which there was no need for. It was a case of wrong place at the wrong time for that sort of speech."

Last month in The Argus letters pages Coun Pepper described herself as the "Queen to her Prime Minister", referring to her civic role as council chairwoman in relation to Ann De Vecchi's political position as council leader.

Responding to the furore, Coun Pepper said: "I explained in my speech that I came as a peacemaker but that our armed forces have a vital role to play.

"I see myself as a future leader and was speaking as someone who cares about our communities.

"I have the utmost respect for every soldier who has served for this country, but they deserve more than to be sent into an illegal war. At no point in the speech did I mention Iraq, simply that I would never agree with sending soldiers to an illegal war.

"If our soldiers are going to lay their lives on the line it should be for a just cause.

"I got some boos but I would say it was a mixed response.

"There were people of all ages and many of them came up to me to shake my hand and agree with what I said.

"I did not use my invitation for political gain. All I wanted to do on Saturday was stand in front of those soldiers and say thank you.

"We are lucky enough to live in a country where we have the right to vote, stand for election and the right to freedom of speech - which was demonstrated that night."

"I see myself as a future leader"

Exactly the sort of person who should be given no position of responsibility in public life then...

Given that the Apathy party will no doubt have the highest share, perhaps we do need people to be substanially different if they are (metaphorically) putting their head above the parapet. People need to say and, if elected, do. How many could we point fingers at and say that they say one thing during an election and then don't follow it up when elected. It has always been the LibDem position that the war was illegal and we should not have taken part in it. But also, too back our troops in doing the job they were sent to do. These things are not mutually exclusive.

What disgusting behaviour, the role of the reunion dinner is not only to reunite old comrades but also to remember those comrades who were not fortunate enough to have survived whichever conflict they served in whether an older or more recent conflict, she quite clearly has no concept of the bond that servicemen and women have and to try to "hijack" their reunion in this way for political gain was only ever going to end one way. As for seeing herself as a natural leader well may i suggest she changes parties as in the last election we had the most unpopular Government up against the most unpopular opposition for many years and still her party was a distant third, No one is denying the Lib Dems their right to oppose the war the outcry is about this distasteful attempt to hawk for votes at this particular event.

I don’t know how you can defend her. Even you've managed to turn this thread into a political one. Enough already!

There is a time & a place to air views like that & an ex-servicemans annual reunion isn't one of them.
But for these brave men, people of my generation would have grown up in a very different world.

I salute & respect them greatly & that haggered ex-stripper isn’t fit to serve them their soup, let alone address them in the manner she did.

She (and you?) should hang her head in shame

As an ex serviceman I can not beleieve how low this women has gone to get a vote, what sought of reception did she expect from Ex Soldiers who were willing to put there lives on the line for there Queen and country with out no thanks, its the sought of left wing attitude that is sadly creeping in to this country and will lead to its sad downfall.

This is the second controversial involving Pepper (the first one being Lewes council banning it's employees from having fag breaks). Two bad stories in the space of a week or so caused me to look up her name on the internet - I was amused to find a whole Wikipedia page dedicated to her (not many Cllrs are significant enough to warrant their own Wiki entry) - aside from her colourful modelling history, I was quite interested to hear that her interest in politics was partly stoked by her past relationship with Clement Freud's son. Alas, her comments regarding her 'future leadership' has betrayed her lack of of political savvy, she is too naive - if you want to become leader, you don't say so on the back of what is undoubtedly negative press. Perhaps her PR ex should have taught her that. As for her comments at the dinner: my first reaction would be to say that her opinions are worthless and should be ignored, however she has highlighted how insensitive she is to serviceman.

Your suggestion is probably more offensive to the memory of those who died at the hands of the Nazi's (either those who were gassed or those who fought and died to prevent that fate for others) than anything she might have said; you should be ashamed Tony.
