The area will play a key role in deciding the future colour of the city council.

Hangleton and Knoll has been one of the most interesting wards over the past four years. In a by-election swing, one of two Labour seats went to the Tories.

Conservative councillor Peter Willows also stood down last year after he was convicted of a gay slur.

His seat remains unoccupied, and the two remaining councillors, Labour's Brian Fitch, who has more than 30 years' experience, and Conservative Dawn Barnett are regarded as hard working.

National swing clearly favours the Conservative Party, which is hopeful Coun Barnett as well as Tony Janio and David Smart will be elected.

Coun Fitch received one the highest number of votes last time and believes his running mates, Eddy Sears and Tony Meadows, could unseat the Conservatives.

The Greens - Andy Player, Tim Godall and Nicola Hodgson - and Lib Dems David Patrick, David Sears and Lee Shingles - are unlikely to unsettle the two biggest parties.

Maggie Clifford is standing for Respect and Stuart Nicholas Bower for UKIP.

I notice that on their posters the Labour candidates are describing themselves as "Your Labour and Defend Council Housing Team". What a cheek! The REAL Defend Council Housing have a copyright on the name, I think you'll find. How wonderfully it sums up New Labour that they should first try to privatise the housing stock - then try to claim the credit for stopping the privatisation of the housing stock! Hangleton residents have a chance to vote for the party that REALLY defended council housing - VOTE RESPECT
