A son will be embarking on a year-long adventure in a bid to raise funds for a cancer charity after his mother was diagnosed with the illness.

Louis Bedwell, 20, has set himself a number of challenges and named the project The One Expedition which he will complete to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

One challenge includes completing the London2Brighton100km challenge this year and knocking two hours off the finish time he achieved by walking in last year’s event.

Each challenge Louis, from Hastings, has set himself has been what he describes as “a physical and mental test that has pushed his body to the limit”.

Another challenge included The Open University student, who is studying health sciences, spending 24 hours in a local Tesco store on a cross-trainer.

He said: “I was honoured to have become one of only two individuals ever to complete the task.

“After 24 hours I had incredibly numb feet and swollen toes. But that was a task of extreme physical endurance - 110 miles is a long way.”

In his most recent attempt to raise money, he completed the Hastings Half Marathon carrying a trolley containing half of his body weight which took him 30 hours.

Louis said: “There is always somebody who wants to say no or tell you your ideas and challenges are stupid. But I've always believed in myself and knew that I would regret it if I didn't keep going.

“I tried not to moan as I had seen what mum had been through since she was diagnosed in 2012 and I wanted to raise as much money as I possibly could to ensure that somebody somewhere didn't have to go through the things we had.”

His family have supported him by picking him up after seemingly endless training sessions and Louis has even managed to inspire one of his sisters to complete an ultra marathon.

Louis spoke of his family’s personal battle with cancer: “I wanted to do something that would turn a negative in to a positive. It gave our family something to focus on.”

So far, Louis has raised a massive £7,000 for the cause and with only one physical challenge left, he needs help if he is to meet his £10,000 target.
