Sometimes it takes a bout of struggle or adversity to spark inspiration for helping others in their own times of need.

And for this week’s Local Heroes, that’s exactly what happened.

Jordan Whyborne, 19, and Ben Aves, 22, both of Worthing, are residents at the town’s supported-housing centre for young people facing homelessness – The Foyer.

Having ‘sofa surfed’ and faced several periods of homelessness since age 16, Ben moved into Worthing Foyer in April 2013 – shortly followed under similar circumstances by Jordan in December 2013.

After battling their own way through what could best be described as a bumpy period of their lives, the pair formed a partnership to organise a fundraising charity football match to raise cash for the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice.

But what turned out to be just one football match has grown into an all-singing, all-dancing, eight-team football tournament and fun day with stalls, entertainment and a fundraising penalty shoot-out – all backed by Worthing FC.

The tournament will take place on Friday, August 29 at the club’s grounds in Palatine Park. It will feature teams from local businesses and groups including young people’s housing group the Phoenix Project, Blueprint 22 charity and Baked – a local cake-making social enterprise that will dish up tasty treats.

Jordan, who came up with the idea after signing up to the Homeless FA, said: “I wanted to use my passion for football to help children who may not be able to get out and play sport as easily as I can.

“I heard about Chestnut Tree House at school and it’s now my favourite charity because of the fantastic work they do for young people.”

Christie Taylor, senior supported housing officer at Worthing Foyer, said: “Jordan has become more confident having previously struggled with anxiety and it has been noted how he has made great progress with his involvement with the Homeless FA and this charity event.

“Ben has also shown some real aptitude for supporting others. He has been a real support for Jordan and helped him with talking to business, organisations and coming up with fundraising ideas.”
