A councillor representing the leading opponents to Brighton and Hove Albion's Falmer Stadium has been telling voters on the doorsteps the party is not against the plans.

Lewes residents have complained of being misled by a councillor canvassing for re-election about the Liberal Democrats' position on the development.

Lewes Bridge councillor Jim Daly told Lewes Albion fans who challenged him on his party's opposition to Falmer that the Lib Dems are not against the stadium - just the way it was decided.

If this were true it would represent a huge U-turn for the party, which has fought the stadium development at every stage of the planning process.

The Seagulls Party, made up of Albion supporters targeting Lib Dem wards in Lewes, said the canvassing showed the ruling party is "running scared".

An Albion fan and Lewes resident, who did not want to be named, opened the door to Coun Daly last week. He told The Argus: "I was pretty shocked, as someone who has followed the saga for years and has read every scrap of news about it. I have never heard of any policy change by the Lewes Liberal Democrats."

Coun Daly was asked to clarify his position by The Argus. He said: "Our opposition was not against the stadium, it was against John Prescott telling people he could build where he liked and how he liked.

Provided Ruth Kelly does everything properly, whatever she says we'll go along with it."

Seagulls Party election candidate Roz South is standing against Coun Daly in the Lewes Bridge ward on May 3. She said: "It is astounding. If he felt that he should have spoken up at the time. The silence in the council chambers when members had the opportunity to speak was astonishing.

"It strikes me that somebody's running scared."

Her colleague Ed Bassford, who is standing in the Ouse Valley and Ringmer ward, said: "It's a bit rich.

It does suit them to fudge it at the moment."

The official Lib Dem line remains that the party is against the stadium.

Coun David Neighbour, the council's cabinet member for planning, is fighting for the East Saltdean and Telscombe Cliffs ward. He said: "We're against the building of any major construction on an area of outstanding natural beauty."

Astounding. The Lib Dems scent a disastrous result and the start dancing on the head of a pin. Have they no political scruples?

"political scruples"

an oxymoron if ever I saw one...

There are lies, damned lies & Lib Dems.

Actions speak louder than words Mr Daly

Jim Daly is saying what LibDems actually have said all along. The trouble is, the fans weren't listening. I don't blame them, actually. The whole stadium thing has been a fiasco ever since the closure of the goldstone ground and the fans (let alone team) deserve better. Still, the Falmer affair has always been about the planning rules and who sticks to them or not. The cross-party decision taken at LDC as always been misconstrued as attack on the Team. Hence the Seagulls party. Even if elected, the Seagulls still have to abide by the rules.... or get sent off.

I would say that this quote is politics at it's most devisive. Certainly every politian always uses phrases that are open to interpretation and enables them to 'U' turn without backtracking on what they said originally. It doesn't matter what Jim Daly says, we know that the Lib Dems in Lewes are against the stadium at Falmer, but are willing to recommend it in other AONB or high public usage which are not on the wealthy Lewes constituents doorsteps. Why is anybody surprise when local politians act like the national ones...

So Scorpion, who's telling the lies?

Jimmy Daly who's saying "the party is not against the plans."

OR

David Neighbour who is saying "We're against the building of any major construction on an area of outstanding natural beauty."

They cant both be telling the truth can they?

typical pathetic lib-dem political response. The party plus the blue rinse Lewes district Council should be ashamed of their delaying tactics
costing the Albion
megabucks. The Falmer millionaires( who know nothing about anything especially football) who funded the delaying tactics should also be named & shamed

Good work Mr Marzouk. I don't know how you have the time to expose all the hypocrisy in Sussex politics. Don't your colleagues EVER give you a hand?

There's a reason why the Lib Dems will never gain politcal control of this country. They don't have a clue how to lie without being caught out. Pathetic performance by Daly. I'm just worried that he'll have won a few votes with his fibs.

If the Lib-Dems can be his two-faced about Falmer it'll be interesting to see whether they'll have three faces over the proposed Phoenix development in Lewes.
