Brighton is one of the safest places in the country to live if you want to avoid being the victim of a burglary, a new report has revealed.

The city is sixth in the a league table of the towns at least risk from a break-in in England and Wales.

The figures were released by insurance company Endsleigh after researchers studied the claims made by policyholders over the past four years.

The safest town is Guildford followed by Swindon and Dundee.

The highest risk for household theft is in Nottingham, Leeds and Hull.

Brighton's place in the burglary league table reflects the drop in break-ins across Sussex in recent years.

Police figures show the risk to residents of having their homes burgled fell by 20 per cent last year.

There were 1,200 fewer victims across Sussex than in previous years.

In the past ten years domestic burglary in Sussex has fallen by 55 per cent.

In Brighton and Hove there has been a 29 per cent fall in burglary over the last year following Operation Reduction, which focuses on getting users of class A drugs into treatment and dealers off the streets.

Since the specialist operation began in 2005 the number of break-ins across the city has fallen by more than half.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "There has been a dramatic fall in burglaries across Sussex.

"This new report reflects what we have been saying and we are pleased the reduction in burglaries is being reflected in insurance claims because that has to be good news for householders."

The spokesman said better policing and householders increasing their security were among the reasons for the massive reduction in burglaries in recent years.

He said: "The figures are continuing to reduce. It is difficult to know all the reasons. Certainly people are more aware of security."

While the drop in burglaries is good news, there is bad news for other Sussex residents.

People living in Hove are the clumsiest in the country, according to the report.

Residents are 35 per cent more likely to make a claim for accidental damage in the home compared to the average Endsleigh policyholder.

Hove tops the league followed by Plymouth and Milton Keynes. The safest place to live to avoid household accidents appears to be Manchester, Leeds and Stockport.
