Council fat cats set for massive pay boost

Town hall leaders are set for huge pay rises - with the county's best-paid official to earn more than £200,000 a year.

West Sussex County Council is looking at recommendations to increase the top end of wage brackets for the authority's chief executive, chief fire officer and other directors by a whopping 10 per cent.

Campaigners today labelled the move an insult and said it was further proof of a growing army of town hall "fat cats" growing rich on taxpayers' money.

The proposed increase means the chief executive at the council could expect to pick up a salary of up to £206,477 - almost £4,000 per week.

Meanwhile directors will earn between £119,306 to £144,213, and the chief fire officer between £98,536 and £124,354.

The increases will be recommended to councillors for approval in a report to be presented at a meeting of the council's governance committee next week. It also recommends the lower end of the wage brackets be increased by four per cent.

Matthew Elliott, the chief executive of the Taxpayers' Alliance pressure group, said: "Most people have only seen their wages rise by the rate of inflation this year, so it is disgraceful that these civil servants could enjoy pay rises of 10 per cent.

"Thousands of people are having to choose between heating their homes and paying their council tax bills. It's a complete insult that so much of their money goes down the drain on top salaries for council staff."

A council spokesman today said it was inappropriate to comment as the matter was set to be discussed at the meeting and no decision had been taken.

However, in justifying the recommendation, the document reads: "This report examines recent salary movements and proposes to increase the pay band to reflect those movements and current market.

"The pay band for directors needs to be reviewed regularly and stay competitive with the market to maintain stability in leadership and secure talented individuals."

If committee members agree the deal at the Monday meeting the recommendations will be passed to the full council for final approval.

Earlier this year The Argus revealed how campaigners claimed council tax rises were funding a burgeoning group of "fat cat" officials in Sussex.

The Taxpayers' Alliance used Freedom of Information legislation to publish a rich list of council staff. The pressure group went to 230 local authorities and asked for details of employees whose pay packets topped £100,000.

West Sussex County Council chief executive Mark Hammond was said to enjoy an annual wage of £188,202 - eclipsing the salary of Prime Minister Tony Blair - although the council disputed the figure.

The figures revealed a total of nine employees at West Sussex on six-figure salaries, while there were six "fat cats" at East Sussex County Council, with chief executive Cheryl Miller the top earner on £154,425.

Across the country, the total wage bill for the 578 people on the list was £72 million - compared with £53 million for those in the same bracket the previous year.

Why am I not surprised, increasingly these people have been running towns and city’s with complete disregards to the wishes of elected councillors and the residents. They cannot afford to repair their crumbling housing stock, they do not know how to keep traffic on the move, contrary to all the propaganda Brighton is not a vibrant city just jump a bus and ride along the sea front what do you see dirty tatty old buildings. Our over paid chief executive boasts about how wonderful his roots in Moulsecoomb were, well jump a bus mate and take a look the people are still great but the aging properties they are forced to live in are not, you spend millions per year on consultants so why do we need you, lets sack the lot of them.

I really hope the Homophobic security at Hove town hall aren't getting a pay rise too. If they are I may just have to pursue them for payback for the massive scar I still have on my arm 3 months on...

Hang on a moment - aren't these people PUBLIC SERVANTS? Aren't they supposed to be the tax-payer's representatives? Aren't they supposed to represent the people who pay their wages? Whilst I struggle to cope with the crumbling traffic / parking / social aspects of this city and go without so that I can live responsibly and pay rising tax bills, these people who are NOT representing my wishes or views AT ALL are getting a 6 figure salary?

There's something not right here - it's not joined up at all; they should only get rewards and bonuses if the people who they are supposed to represent AGREE that they are doing a good job!

Further evidence that the world is going to pot!

I think that it is totally irresponsible of council officers to take such huge pay rises, but since when did our so called leaders ever listen to what we say? They are a law unto themselves.

They have made hundreds redundant. Are outsourcing key services and rewarding themselves for doing less. An absolute disgrace. If the councillors had an ounce of decency they should bounce this proposal. We are being shafted by these white collar mafioso.

What you have to remember is that if these people were doing exactly the same job for the private sector they would be on a much higher wage. At the end of the day they are going to make decisions that some people will like and some that people don't like. At the end of the day you can't please everyone so whoever isn't happy is going to moan.

Oh well...

Don't be a pessimist Trixie. You can please everyone.

Remember, you're paying for these extortionate salaries while services are cut, workers lose their jobs, council tax goes through the roof, schools get closed down, council housing isn't being built, hospitals are losing wards and units, pensions are under threat, widening wealth gap, no social mobility, no secure jobs... all these things have been supported and carried out by these greedy thugs.

What sort of a world do we want to live in?

Start a petition, organise a local meeting about it, write articles to the argus, demonstrate outside their offices, refuse to pay your council tax in protest... There are loads of things we can do together to stop this from happening.

Let's get going...

Drew - I'm shocked by your comment about homophobic door staff at Hove Town Hall. Have you complained to the council or reported it to the police? If you don't want to do that, the council's LGBT Community Safety Officer, John Irvine, is there to give you advice and support. Just call the council switchboard on 290000. Or one of the Green Party councillors could pursue it on your behalf - call the party office on 766670 or email lgbt@brighonandhoveg
