A gang of thugs are touring Brighton and Hove by car to attack and rob gay men they can find.

The men have claimed two victims in the last week and detectives fear they will continue picking off targets until they are stopped.

Police are now warning members of the gay community to be on the look-out for a red saloon which the violent gang have been using to catch their prey.

Their latest attack left a 36-year-old Brighton man with such horrific swelling around his face that doctors have not yet been able to establish the full extent of his injuries.

Detective Sergeant Mick Richards, of Sussex Police, said: "This was a really vicious, unprovoked attack on two members of the gay community.

"It is very unusual and we are asking the gay community to be our eyes and ears.

"If they hear or see this car and they are subjected to any homophobic abuse then they should contact us immediately."

The first attack happened on Friday night at about 10pm.

A 39-year-old man and his partner, 36, were walking in Hamilton Road near Preston Park in Brighton.

Four Afro-Caribbean men in a red saloon car pulled up and began to shout homophobic abuse at the couple.

The 36-year-old ran away and hid nearby.

His partner was punched and kicked to the ground.

They shouted anti-gay abuse at him and stole his gold necklace, watch and cash.

He suffered serious injuries to his legs and face and received treatment at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

The 36-year-old partner of the victim became their next victim.

Yesterday morning he was walking alone at the top of Preston Park Avenue, less than half a mile from the initial attack, at about 1am.

He was returning home after buying cigarettes from a garage on London Road when the same red four-door saloon pulled over and four men got out.

Again, they hurled homophobic abuse at him before punching and kicking him to the ground.

They stole his cash before driving away.

The victim was yesterday being treated in hospital for serious facial injuries.

Police last night released details of the attacker in case members of the public can identify them.

One is 5ft 10, around 14 stone and in his 20s. He wore his hair in tight braids.

The other three men had short, almost shaved, hair.

Detectives are currently viewing CCTV footage recorded close to the assaults to see if it includes images of the gang responsible.

And they plan to speak to businesses across the city to look at private surveillance footage in the hope this could help pinpoint where the attackers headed to after the assaults.

Police are particularly keen to speak to the occupants of a 4x4 vehicle, which slowed down to pass the red car during the first attack, to contact them.

The number of homophobic attacks recorded in Brighton and Hove rose by 36 percent last year, up from 135 in 2005-06 to 184 in the 12 months up to March 31.

Broken down into larger categories around 45 per cent of these crimes were assaults, 16 per cent harassment and 13 per cent public order offences.

DS Mick Richards said: "We have passed all the information to gone to all the city gay media organisations and we have spoken to representatives from the lesbian, gay, bi and transsexual community.

"We are looking for people to help us. This isn't the norm, it's really unusual in Brighton and Hove to get this level of unprovoked attack on members of the gay community."

Anyone with any information about the attacks can contact police on 0845 6070999 and quote Operation Leighton or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

'Have you been the gang attacking residents? Leave your messages below.'

Yeah, like they are going to post a message saying that they are the one's responsible!!!!
Maybe they could leave their real names and their car reg number so that the dopey Old Bill can actually catch them.
Or maybe they are too thick to read & write which is why they gou out robbing and beating up gay men.

Bet the car isn't taxed or insured either...

.. I think that it should read "have you SEEN the gang attacking residents?" A rather unfortunate error in typing!

This is disgusting! Its the same as racism and I bet these 4 idiots would be the first to harp on about that!
Discrimination of any kind makes me bloody sick its naive, pathetic and childish!
I hope that these vile men pick on the wrong people and end up splattered across the road, we dont want them in our city!

Again Brighton and Hove residents attacked, abused and hospitalised. These four men are nothing more than hate filled, cowardly thugs. The sooner they are caught the safer we will all be.

Nice of his boyfriend to run away and hide nearby, wonder if he dumped him after?

...or maybe he told his partner to run and stepped in the way to prevent both being attacked. Done it myself when my partner and I was attacked 15 years ago....and I'd do it again.

That does not suprise me. If you and your "partner" as you put, it stuck together maybe you could have fought them off?

I sincerely hope the law catches these miserable little excuses for humanity as soon as possible. I daresay they were inspired by the homophobic rantings of Beanieman and his ilk.

You don't have to be gay to be abused either. I'm not.

I was ran off the road on my bike by four young men in a car, then deliberately run over by the car and chased over several streets because they thought I was gay. When I told them I wasn't it didn't matter. I was injured and very shaken.

This happened near the pier on the seafront.

I reported it and the police picked up the driver. He was only charged with dangerous driving. The police actually gave his solicitor my home address. The trial took months to come around and then he appealed, which took even longer. The Judge said he'd never heard of such a bad incident, never mind 'dangerous driving'. He ordered the handling of the case to be reviewed.

I've not heard anything since.

The guy in question was a minor at the time of the attack, so all he got was a few months in youth custody. The other three got off scott free.

Homophobic attacks and harassment are rife in Brighton. There's massive under reporting of incidents.

Having been through the system I can understand why too.

What gives anyone the right to judge another let alone beat someone senseless? These nasty scroats deserve a hole in the ground. There I have judged them!

..and maybe 'Dave' if you were a little less quick to leap to judgement on the exact circumstances you'd have something a little less shallow to say...in my case I'd spent 7 yrs in the Army and could handle myself..as for my partner, she couldn't so I told her to run for help whilst I did what I could....you weren't there at the reported attack and that may very well have been the case...and not to forget the ideal of self-sacrifice for those that you love. Very telling that that ideal didn;t even cross your mind in your rush to judge!!

Dave: What an arrogant, pathetic thing to say.
You had no idea what the situation was and do you honestly know what you would do if you were ever unfortunate enough to be in that situation?
As for the gang which beat these guys up, I hope those vile, cowardly individuals are caught and get what they deserve.
No one deserves to be subjected to this sort of attack, gay, straight or otherwise.

I think its quite odd, that the gang targeting the same area in preston park two nights in a row, and the second night got the other partner. Seams to me that the couple where targeted, not gay men in general. why would you risk going back to the same area twice unless you wanted a specific person. If you wanted to gaybash you'd drive around kemp town not preston park. I don't know these people so i may be wrong, but gaybashing could just be they're excuse to cover up the real reason for being targeted. Could be money, drugs anything.
