More than 10,000 people welcomed the wind over the weekend for an annual kite festival.

Ghosts, scuba divers, teddy bears and sting rays were among the multi-coloured craft that took to the skies in Brighton's Stanmer Park.

Enthusiasts and families from across the South came to add their kites to the breezy collection at Brighton Kite Festival.

Simon Hennessey, chairman of Brighton Kite Flyers and festival organiser, said: "It went really well. We had loads of people attend and considering what we've had for the last couple of weeks we couldn't have done better with the weather.

"It's a completely fun event. A lot of people come in the morning and carry on all day.

"Everybody had kites when they were kids and everyone wants their kids to have one but nowadays there's so much to progress into.

"It's not just about buying a £4.99 kite and then throwing it away."

The club was established in 1979 and now has members from across the world.

David Styles, a member from Ashford, Kent, spent Saturday flying the club's massive inflatable Manta Ray - so big it needs to be attached to a Land Rover to weigh it down.

The 55ft long kite cost £6,000 and had to be imported from New Zealand.

The festival included displays from some of the UK's most accomplished stunt kite flyers, as well as kite surfers, food and trade stalls and areas for public kite flying.

More than 1,000 kites were built by children in especially organised workshops.
