Building the stadium should begin next year and it should be ready for the 2010/11 season, the club's chairman said.

Commenting on the decision Dick Knight said: "What can I say? We all feel fantastic.

"Today is the day Brighton truly becomes a city. It could not have been a true city without this stadium.

"I want to thank everybody for this huge amount of effort that has gone into the campaign.

"At last we have got the decision the club, the city and the fans deserve.

"Today is a triumph for football, community and democracy."

Albion chief executive Martin Perry said: "This is a turning point in the club's history.

"I'm thrilled that the Government has yet again recognised the huge benefits the stadium will bring to the city.

"The next stage is to finalise the funding, go out to tender and appoint a contractor.

"We hope to start building at the back of end of next year and to be in place for the 2010/11 season."

"Huge benefits"? Don't make me laugh. Let's see how they're going to finance it first. Then let's see how they're going to fill it to capacity every week just to meet the repayments on the debt. Let's watch ticket prices shoot up and gates go down. Then let's see the Council come to the rescue when it all goes pear shaped, costing every tax payer in the city. And it's a green light to greedy property developers! Trebles all round!!!

What fantastic news - and long overdue. Match day will really be something to look forward to now and I, for one, am thrilled. At last, Brighton gets a building that it truly deserves, and needs....

B&H will be out of business by 2010. All you'll get is an Ikea on the site and a bumper payday for the council...

Do you really think the smoking ban will have that much affect Sid? Anyway, what has that got to do with the decision re Falmer?

My goodness, people arent actually going to make money out of all this are they? And surely, the club aren't going charge more for entrance into a state of the art stadium are they? Well my goodness.....Repayme
nts on the debt? I bet Dick hasnt factored that into his equations.

Fantastic news for the Albion, its fans and for everybody involved with the club.

I'm not sure why I'm bothering to reply to your ill-informed comments... But BHAFC have budgeted for gates of 10,000 to break even, so the stadium doesnt even need to be half full. By the way, are there any anti-stadiumites that actually know what they're talking about? I thought not.

About time we had our new stadium. I live over 200 miles away and have had to suffer a ton of s**t from Plymouth fans. Hopefully now we will soon be able to match them on the pitch and shove that s**t back down their throats!
