Families are terrified of confronting a knife-wielding teenage gang which is terrorising a housing estate.

The yobs yesterday (Sunday) slashed dozens of car tyres, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage, in Woodingdean, Brighton.

Householders said more than 40 vehicles were targeted by out of control youngsters.

Now people are calling for more police protection because they fear it is only a matter of time before somebody is stabbed.

Residents said they had complained for years about gangs jumping on cars and setting them alight.

But they fear confronting youths carrying weapons after a spate of murders nationwide.

Marion East, 55, of Rudyard Road, said she was one of more than 40 people whose cars were targeted across the estate.

Other roads affected included Rudyard Close, The Ridgway and Deans Road.

She said: "It is only a matter of time before the police are round here dealing with a murder.

"People have had enough and soon someone will go outside to confront the people doing this.

"But if they are slashing tyres they must be carrying weapons in their hands.

"Unfortunately we usually keep our car in the garage but we got in late at night and left it in the road."

Father-of-two Gary Juden, 40, of Rudyard Road, also fell victim to the tyre slashers.

He said: "It means we have people round here walking around with blades.

"If one of us tries to stop them when they are damaging our cars we will get stabbed.

"After this incident, knowing they are going round doing tyres, it is only a matter of time.

"I have lived here for ten years and every vehicle I have had has been jumped all over, smashed up or had its windows put through.

"I understand how overstretched police are but something has to be done. We need active policing."

Father-of-two Jon Wilson, 31, of Rudyard Road, was forced to change a tyre on his BMW.

He said: "Looking at the mark on the tyre it has been caused by a sharp knife.

"If they did get confronted who knows what they would do.

"In January my fiancee, Vicky, had a classic Volkswagen Beetle ruined.

"They stamped on the bonnet, smashed the rear lights and stabbed the tyres.

"We have lived here for about three years but we have considered moving because of it."

Geoffrey Wells, Brighton and Hove city councillor for Woodingdean, urged people speak up and identify the culprits.

He said: "If someone approaches them and one feels rather brave they could pull out a knife.

"The people have got to be prepared to speak up and say who is who to clamp down on the gangs.

"I'd welcome more police but what does concern me is they seem to have their hands cuffed behind their backs with the amount of paperwork."

A Sussex police spokesman could not confirm how many cars were damaged and was unable to comment further.

On Saturday, The Argus reported how pensioner William Crockford, 73, of Neville Road, Hove, caused £14,000 damage to cars in his neighbourood by scraping them with a key.

Brighton magistrates heard how he was angry that office workers were leaving residents with nowhere to park.

Crockford was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay a total of £1,800 to his victims.

"In January my fiancee, Vicky, had a classic Volkswagen Beatle ruined". I was unaware of this Teutonic tribute to the Fab Four. Perhaps VW should speak to their marketing department. They're obviously missing a huge sales opportunity.

I have had 4 cars written off by local yobs. Calling the police certainly is something that needs to be done but will do very little to actually address the issue.

I was one of the victims that had both my cars done last night around North Woodingdean too so not just around the Rudyard Park area as the article would suggest so everyone keep any eye out. It was nice to have response from the police which was to give me a crime number, the same when by car was broken into a few years back too. Just another statistic again, but one with a quite a bit less cash in my families pocket today.

nice to see usual gossip journalism with massive exageration by the argus,So what do you expect an officer to do after the event? nothing seen, nobody heard (unless your interviewed by the argus then you have loads of information you must have forgotten to mention earlier when you reported your car damaged to the police)just rumour speculation about gangs with knives...
now of course if some is getting a kicking they will attend its an immediate incident thats happening at that time WITH suspects!!!

Now I will tell you facts I know as a victim of this mindles behaviour. Whilst I was out changing my tires which have a slit about 1 inch wide about 2mm thick (sounds like a knife yes!) someone came up to me who said that in a parallel road 4 cars had been done and a number plate stolen, thats 6 cars in 2 roads.I know aroudn Rudyard Park way almost an entire street had been done so before you go spouting off your nonsense why don't you get some facts! Maybe not kids but defintaly a knife and substantiall numbers of cars involved.

MORE POLICE, LESS ANPR, MORE FOCUS ON PATROLLING ON FOOT AND NOT CAR STOPPING ORIENTATED. MORE STOP AND SEARCH OF YOUTHS, USE TERRORISM ACT..WE DONT CARE.

LESS 12 DIFFERENT BITS OF PAPERWORK FOR EVERY ARREST.

MORE HOTSPOT PATROLLING

LESS CHASING CARS

ALLOW HOTSPOT AREAS TO BECOME OVER 18 AFTER A CERTAIN TIME IN EVENING, ALLOWS EASY ID IF PROBLEM DICTATES.

MORE PLAIN CLOTHES TO CATCH RATHER THAN DETER.

A PROACTIVE APPROACH IS NEEDED TO THIS PROBLEM...LETS GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO CATCH THESE DUMB IDIOTS.

IF AN INCIDENT HAS HAPPENED WITHIN LAST 5 MINS..REPORT IT AS OFFENDERS ON SCENE..THIS WILL GENERATE A GRADE 1 RESPONCE FROM POLICE
THE SYSTEM GRADES THE URGENCY DEPENDING ON THE PROBLEM AND IF OFFENDERS ARE STILL ON THE SCENE, IF NO HOPE OF CATCHING THEM, THEN A SLOWER RESPONCE IS ISSUED

Alison, W'hawk says...
11:34am Mon 22 Oct 07

How sweet, the police will come immediately if you report a crime within 5 minutes? Try 5 hours which is what they did when my house got vandalised for the second time. Oh, and they never even asked me for a statement. I've given up reporting it now - 20 reports and crime numbers, none of them linked, no follow up. My car has been damaged 5 times in two months. I'm moving to an area where the police actually police. Urgent response? Don't make me laugh!

If the system is not serving the people in the way it should be then use it to your advantage.

Paperwork should not be a criteria for a decision based on whether to deal with a crime or not.

This is the only way things will change away from targets paperwork to serving and protecting taxpayers effectivley.

If a system is wrong then let it break, it may be the only way to get change.

I have lived in Woodingdean for the best part of 2 years now and experienced a number of anti social incidents in the area. The local police were very good and did put out extra police in the area on friday and Saturday nights which did result in a very quiet summer indeed. the central park area was where the most problem was in the evenings. Local youths used to hang out next to the local Bowls club causing problems. With more patrols the area has become a lot quieter over the last year which is great but then the problems seemed to move to Warren Road shops. People please keep logging these incidents on the 0845 6070999 number because the more people that actually complain the more will be done. the main community officer in Woodingdean to contact is Mark Hammond. Also log onto the sussex police website look for local policing and pick the area which is under the Deans on the map of Brighton and Hove, Mark Hammonds's email contact details are there so also email him with your Woodingdean concerns.
Goodluck.

I grew up in Woodindean i am shocked and dishartended to hear these events.

I think the parents of these YOBS are also to blame by not teaching them manners or respect.National conscription seams to be the answer to these youngsters that would teach them respect and also give them skills for life.

It comes as no surprise to here of the attacks on parked cars in Woodingdean. Where i live in Bexhill Road, we have had to put up with ariels being snapped off, scratches appearing on our cars, vehicles being 'run over', dents from well aimed kicks on our cars etc. Its a regular problem, coupled with general anti-social problems, cars racing up and down with their VERY loud exhausts, wheelspinning and loud sound systems. Add to this the regular shouting, swearing and bus shelter smashing, and you have a wonderful place to live! Of course most of this only happens at night, it seems that as the street lights come on, the problems start. The police do NOTHING to help, they ask for the numberplates of the speeding cars but because they are going so fast you cant get them. As far as the bus shelter smashing and shouting/swearing goes, WHEN the police do turn up, they 'have a word' with the local vandals, move them away from the area and then leave. The idiots then come back and start all over again! To give you some idea just how bad it is, an elderly couple who live nearby are afraid to even LOOK out of their window at night, for fear of the local yobs. Nice. Welcome to Woodingdean. Unfortunately i think these things will keep happening until someone is beaten badly, stabbed or murdered. But hey ho, thats life these days...

Darren, Woodingdean says...
3:54pm Mon 22 Oct 07

After reading the other posts on this comment page i have an idea. How about a vigilante group armed with bats to stop these idiots? Im sure if that was organised then the police pressence would dramatically increase!!! The parents of these yobs should be named and shamed, that might make them sit up and take notice of the things their 'little angels' are doing to the decent people of Woodingdean.

That probably wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference. Parents today don't give a **** what their so called children do.
If the yobs are old enough to cause trouble, they're old enough to get a bloody good kicking. And the parents deserve one too.

It is not just the last few days this has been happening but a few months and is getting worse i have 2 cars too my household and both of them have been scratched and a few day ago my partners tyre appeared too have a knife slashed through it, and this was down cowley drive so they are obviously not just targeting 1 area of woodingdean, FACT What the youths dont get is that when they have a car and have these problems done too there car and cost them money too put right they wont be too pleased then will they. Better lighting situations might help put the youngsters off as they would more likely too be identified. Something Needs too be done

What exactly do we pay our taxes for? Stop digging our roads up, making then narrower, penalising those of us who sruggle to find a parking space, and get some bobbies out on the beat. Anyone would think that Brighton and Hove was a poor city...we're certainly not. I agree that some parents don't give a toss about what their kids get up to. Show some responsibility, stop spoiling your offspring and show your neighbours some respect. Or get out of my city.
