A hooded youth robbed a bakery with a knife in a lunchtime raid at a busy shopping centre.
Detectives want to talk to people who tried to chase the robber when he fled the shop on Saturday.
A worker at the bakery was forced to hand over several hundred pounds in the raid.
The robbery took place at Baker's Oven in Queensway, Crawley, at about 1.30pm.
The thief escaped from the back of the shop onto The Boulevard and ran along the alleyway at the side of Crawley town hall.
Members of the public gave chase but could not catch him.
Police believe a young man seen standing outside William Hill betting shop at the time of the robbery may also have been involved in the incident.
No-one was injured in the raid.
DC Lee Franklin, of Sussex Police, said: "This was a brazen act at on a busy Saturday lunchtime during the half term holidays.
"Several members of the public tried to chase the offender but unfortunately none of them gave their contact details to police.
"There will have been many witnesses who we would encourage to come forward to talk to us."
The raider is described as a white man in his late teens or early 20s, skinny and about 6ft.
He was wearing a dark charcoal-grey hoodie with a zipped front and pale logo, dark blue stonewashed jeans with light patches on the front and white trainers.
Anyone with information should contact DC Franklin on 0845 6070999 quoting serial 810 of 27th October or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
