Work to construct Brighton Eye delayed

Work to construct a much-anticipated city landmark will begin nearly a year late because of fears it could become a repeat of London's wobbling Millennium Bridge.

Construction of the futuristic Brighton Eye observation tower at the site of the derelict West Pier was originally earmarked for July 2007 but a series of delays means it is now due to start sometime in spring 2008.

Geoff Lockwood, from the West Pier Trust, said work had been going on behind the scenes to make sure the foundations were secure enough to support the unusual structure.

He said architects Marks Barfield, who also designed the London Eye, had been carrying out extensive checks to make sure the tower would be safe.

He said: "Work to the tower has been going on for at least three months but none of it has been visible.

"It is such a unique structure that we are having to be very careful with preparations and make sure everything is right. Everyone remembers the wobbly bridge over the Thames and wants to avoid that happening again. We need to make sure everything is properly in place.

"Now a lot of that has been done so hopefully work will soon start - which will be very exciting.

"Like everyone I would have liked work to have started this autumn but on the other hand a few months delay to make sure it stays there longer is more than worthwhile."

Now the structural engineers have given the project the thumbs up and it is hoped to be ready for the public by early 2010.

Dr John Roberts, the i360's chief engineer, said there had been problems with Brighton and Hove's main sewer which ran directly under the site. He said they now had permission to divert the sewer and so work could go ahead.

Dr Roberts said: "Our site investigations have gone extremely well. We bored into the ground and have found that there is good quality rock.

"We don't anticipate any problems when we start building the foundations for the tower in the New Year."

The adventurous design will include a vertical cable car, an 18-metre-wide pod which travels up and down a 180 metre tall spire.

The structure will be four metres wide.

City councillor Garry Peltzer Dunn said: "We are really pleased that progress is going well with all of the pre-construction phase of this development.

"We are looking forward to a construction start in the New Year and believe it will be cause for national note and celebration in the way that the Eye was in London."

Will the Brighton Eye boost the city as a tourist destination? Tell us what you think below.

The spring probably means the late spring, by which time it will be almost a year behind the start which was to have been this summer...

Why not use the time to clear the old pier from the sea or is the Tax payer going to get stuffed with this cost further on down the road. Cant wait to LOOK DOWN on this tower from the rop of the King Alfred Towers

surprise surprise, first work was going to start july 23rd, then oct 29th and now spring 2008 no exact date. That means it probably will never happen. What hope is there for all the other developments, funny how nasty concrete boxes of new flats pop up overnight. I am bored with this now and it seems dated already. I suppose at least this means the king alfred has no chance of being built whilst I am alive, for the next fifty years. In the meantime lets watch the brighton centre decay and the tourists disappear, this city cannot even clean up the streets of rubbish graffiti vandalism and drugs, the north lanes are in danger and transport is becoming appauling. It is not a bad place to live, but fed up with these self promoting council idiots that do nothing except dig up the roads, severly restrict planning on private residences and implement ridiculous road schemes.

Jayne, you are very boring. Most major projects with so much money invested do not run on schedule or are you as naive as your post makes you sound?

Alterations to private residences. Are you talking from personal experience? It is essential that there is a strict level of control, certainly with a large amount of listed buildings in B&H.

Mmmmmm.. I thought there was a major storm water tunnel running under that location which was constructed in the 90's?

Jayne's right on the money. Paul, a word that best describes you can be found in Scunthorpe...
The London Eye was and is a success because it was a magical feat of engineering sailed down the Thames in time for the millenium. Here, by contrast, we lose a year reaching a 'vital' decision on sewage diverting. Spot the difference?

Unfortunately that's what we have come to EXPECT in this country thesedays, Millenium bridge, wembley, scottish parliament etc etc.

Other countries can't quite grasp just HOW wrong we seem to get it. Take Japan for example in 2002 for the world cup. Many brand new, state of the art stadia built on time, on budget etc.

However, IF that happens here, Highbury for eg, we're shocked.

what a great idea! I am quite amused, as I am , if not the first, then one of the first members of the Eye-high club in London!

Myself, my brother and my girlfriend (a joint effort) became i think the first three members back in December 1999 - before the official opening thanks to knowing the right people on the staff!
