Showgirls could soon be baring all at Eastbourne's first fully naked pole and lap dancing club.

Controversial plans for the club and poker playing den will be considered by borough councillors on Monday night.

Minnesota Jax, in Seaside Road, Eastbourne, wants restrictions on its licence relaxed so dancers can go completely naked rather than just topless.

It also wants to remove a condition that says the girls cannot touch customers and must keep a metre away from them.

Darren Bush took over the management of the former pool hall in August and said the changes were necessary to update the venue and keep up with the competition.

He said that although it would be the first fully naked club in Eastbourne it was already the norm in other towns such as Hastings and Brighton.

Mr Bush, who also runs Hastings Beer Festival, said he wanted to improve the venue by holding live music nights for upcoming local bands, extending opening hours until 3am each night so poker games in the basement of the venue can run their course, and using the silhouetted image of a bikini-clad girl as part of the advertising.

Mr Bush, 35, said: "As far as I am aware most lap dancing clubs are fully nude now. It is just a matter of keeping up with the times and is what the members want.

"I don't personally think it is so out of the question. There are already topless girls all along the beach, and the one metre rule is just unpractical.

"If we want to compete we need to be the same as other clubs in nearby towns.

"But if people are upset about these plans they should come and speak to me about it. I am willing to explain things to anyone."

Sussex Police and councillors have objected amid fears of increased late-night noise and disturbance to residents.

Councillor Neil Stanley said: "I am a liberal and I take a liberal stance with lap dancing itself.

"But there is a situation with the number of late-night drinking establishments in the area and the impact another late licence might have on antisocial behaviour.

"My concern is about even more people heading back onto the streets drunk late at night. 3am does seem very late."
