A group supporting Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club's stadium plans has taken more than a fifth of the vote in a council by-election.
The Seagulls Party, campaigning in favour of a Sussex community stadium, won nearly 22 per cent of the vote for the Ouse Valley and Ringmer seat on Lewes District Council.
Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott gave the go-ahead for a new stadium at Falmer, to the north of Brighton, but there was a mistake concerning the description of the site in his approval letter.
A legal challenge against Mr Prescott's decision had already been launched by Lewes District Council.
RESULTS: Lewes District - Ouse Valley and Ringmer: Lib Dem 715, C 521, Seagulls Party 359, Lab 41. (May 2003 - Three seats Ind 1123, C 877, Lib Dem 766, 678, 647, C 491, Lab 456, Green 241). Lib Dem gain from Ind. Swing 5.7% C to Lib Dem.
