The celebrated artist John Constable painted this picture of Brighton beach in July 1824. It shows colliers landing their cargo on the stones.
His notes indicate that there was a lovely white and golden light as the sun disappeared and the tide receded.
Constable, who came to live in Brighton in a vain bid to improve his wife’s health, did not like what he called the din and tumult of the town.
But Brighton inspired him to complete some of his best work both on the beach and the surrounding countryside.
Regular reader John Stanaway of Hove sent in the picture.
