THE Green Party has stood down another candidate in Sussex as part of plans for a progressive alliance.
Lewes Greens have withdrawn Katie Hawks from the ballot paper with 48 hours to spare in a move designed to help the Liberal Democrats regain the seat.
The party said it had taken the decision after receiving assurances that the Lib Dems would not seek a coalition with the Conservatives in the next Parliament, would back a second referendum and would campaign to reform the voting system.
Elections co-ordinator Anthony Shuster said: “We are standing down for the common good.”
Lib Dem candidate Kelly-Marie Blundell said: “The Green Party recognise that it is a two-horse race in the constituency of Lewes. We are fighting for every vote to hold back the Tories and their hard Brexit agenda. The Liberal Democrats are the best choice for voters who want to see a progressive opposition to a Conservative Government.”
