A VIGIL was held to pay tribute to those injured and killed during Monday night’s terror attack at the Manchester Arena.

The gathering outside Hove Town Hall at 10.30am saw around 80 residents, council staff and councillors turn up to pay their respects and hold a minute silence.

A vigil also took place outside Brighton Town Hall at the same time this morning.

Gerard Brunt, 70, retired, from Hove, said: “It is great to see locals coming together to pay respects to those injured and killed during Monday night’s tragedy.

“All we can do now is support each other and hope that this doesn’t happen again.

“Showing we care and are resolute in remembering those lost during the attack is a token of our community spirit, as well as our national spirit.”

Other vigils around the city today include a We Stand Together rally to be held outside Brighton Town Hall at 6.30pm, organised by The Hummingbird Project.

Speakers at tonight’s We Stand Together event will include city councillor Emma Daniel, Green candidate for Brighton Pavilion Caroline Lucas, Richard Williams from Sanctuary on Sea, and Elaine Ortiz from The Hummingbird Project.

The One Voice partnership - a group involving the council and faith groups in the city – announced that the above vigils would be held today.

A statement from One Voice said: “The Brighton and Hove One Voice Partnership reaffirms that communities, council and police stand together in solidarity in our response following the tragic incident in Manchester.

“We do not tolerate violence against innocent people, wherever it takes place.

“Together we speak with one voice against extremist perspectives and terrorist actions in the city and elsewhere.”
