MORE than 60,000 recycling wheelie bins will be delivered to residents across Brighton and Hove over the next three months.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s CityClean began delivery of the 240 litre bins yesterday.

They are being introduced in response to requests from residents.

Before bins are delivered, residents will receive a leaflet explaining how the service will work and what can and cannot go in to the bin for recycling. Once the bin arrives, it can be used straight away.

Research has shown that the 240 litre bins should be adequate for most households but residents have the option of ordering a larger or smaller size.

The council is urging residents to hang on to their recycling boxes for glass as that cannot be placed in the new wheeled bins.

Assisted collections will be available for those residents who are unable to place their bins by the kerb.

Collection days won’t change but residents living in Whitehawk will move from weekly to fortnightly collections.

Most residents who live outside the city centre and have space to store bins, will receive a recycling wheelie bin.

However, there are some areas wheelie bins are not suitable, for example where there are narrow pavements or steep steps.

If you don’t currently have a wheelie bin for rubbish, you won’t get one of the new recycling wheelie bins.

CityClean said it is looking at ways to improve the rubbish and recycling collection service for people living in these areas.

Areas covered by communal bins are not affected.

The introduction follows a trial last year which the council said led to positive feedback. The bins will be delivered in three phases by area.

The first phase will cover areas in Central Hove, East Brighton, Goldsmid, Hangleton and Knoll, Hove Park, North Portslade, South Portslade, Westbourne and Wish wards.

The first phase of approximately 20,000 bins will be delivered over the next month starting from this week.

Leaflets will be distributed to all households in the scheme before the wheelie bins arrive.

The delivery schedule has been designed to coincide with the current recycling rounds, so each phase includes multiple wards. This also means that a whole ward may not be completed in one phase.

Detailed street by street information will be available on the council’s website. As the bins are delivered, officers will be available to answer resident queries.
