ANGRY residents say the council is “failing to do its job” and claiming bins were not emptied on their street for three weeks.

Michael Dixon, of Kingston Close, Hangleton, is medically retired due to a heart condition and has osteoarthritis in both legs.

He lives at the top of the narrow road, which does not have vehicle access at the top.

He is reliant on Brighton and Hove City Council’s waste collection team Cityclean to walk up the path to collect his bins.

But he said there have been several collections where collections have been missed for weeks.

Mr Dixon and other neighbours have complained to the council to make it aware of the problem.

The 53-year-old said: “I don’t like living in rubbish. The council says they can’t get up the road properly to collect bins right at the top, so they bring in a dinky little truck and leave the big one at the bottom of the road.

“I have also been told by a council worker on the phone that they don’t have enough staff to do it properly.

“I have already paid my council tax for the coming months and the council is failing to do its job that is in the contract when we move in.

“The system used to work fine but when the council’s frontline cutbacks started I noticed that they just weren’t turning up on time. I am on assisted bin collection which means they have to come to my house to collect the waste.

“When I first phoned the council a while ago it took me 45 minutes to get through to them.

“On that occasion it took them two weeks to pick up the bins. The problem went away for a little bit but then it has happened a number of times since.

“They only just came on Friday after I waited three weeks for them to be emptied.

“The taxpayer is doing all the work by sorting the rubbish and recycling but the council is not doing its bit. It is just not good enough and my neighbours and I are getting fed up of it.”

Mr Dixon even made his way to Hove Town Hall to speak to a council employee about the issue after he felt no action was being taken following his phone calls.

A council spokesman said: “The collections were missed due to problems with access. We have now moved it to a Friday so this should resolve the issue.”
