in Meet the Candidate corner today is Gillian Keegan, who is standing for the Conservatives in Chichester.

The Argus (TA): What is the biggest single issue in the constituency you are standing in?

Gillian Keegan (GK): In the Chichester constituency I would say the single biggest issue is bringing the community together to agree on a solution for improvements to the A27, plus ensuring our schools are properly funded following the changes to school funding arrangements.

TA: Do you believe that Brexit can bring about a positive change to Sussex?

GK: I believe we will see some positive changes for West Sussex as a result of the Brexit negotiations but there will undoubtedly be uncertainty before these materialise.

It is vital that we protect the interests of our local businesses, whatever business sector, to ensure we continue to enjoy a strong economy.

I am sure that the farming and fishing industries are hopeful that they will benefit from the UK exiting the EU.

TA: Who will win this election?

GK: I’m standing as a Conservative candidate so of course I would hope that the Conservatives win with an increased majority.

TA: Who is your political hero and why?

GK: From the distant past Benjamin Disraeli – “upon the education of the people of this country the fate of this country depends.”

More recently it would have to be Margaret Thatcher.

Many Conservatives would choose Margaret Thatcher but probably not many people from Liverpool would.

I believe she was the right women at the right time and reformed our country, putting us on the path to economic prosperity that we enjoy today.

TA: What has been the best moment you have had out campaigning?

GK: Definitely when the sun is shining.

I really enjoyed having a few of my Liverpudlian family members campaigning with me.

They were blown away by the beautiful countryside in the Chichester Constituency.

TA: Is this election necessary considering we already have a majority government that was due to run until 2020?

GK: The negotiations as we leave the EU will be the challenge of a lifetime and it is critical that the Prime Minister and the negotiating team have the country united behind them.

TA: Can voters be confident that our current system is the best way to select a government?

GK: British democracy is admired all over the world. It may not be perfect but it works.
