Judges were left clutching at straws as they tried to decide the winners of the annual Woodingdean Scarecrow competition in Brighton.

Scarecrows of all shapes and sizes were on show around roads throughout the area, including Warren Road, The Brow, The Ridgeway and Merston Close.

Individuals, groups and businesses worked hard to come up with their own versions, which were on display throughout last week. They included tiny scarecrows hiding inside flower displays, and larger ones riding a bike, sitting out enjoying the sunshine or digging for vegetables.

The scarecrows were eventually gathered up and put on display in and around Holy Cross Church on Saturday and yesterday as part of its annual flower festival.
