At just one pound and 14 ounces could little Poppet be the smallest dog in the world?

Her owner Nikki Barnes, 46, certainly thinks so - and now she's trying to get it confirmed for the record books.

The Chihuahua is the latest star of Ronnie Corbett's new BBC show Ronnie's Animal Crackers.

She joined tens of other canines for filming at a doggy tea party in Surrey - complete with fetching pink skirt.

Mrs Barnes said: “She loved it, she was a real star. She wasn't fazed by the cameras at all.”

Did this story make you chuckle? Here are some more recent quirkies to tickle your fancy:

The breeder, based in Eason Green near Uckfield, has nine other pet chihuahuas. However, it has always been clear there is something special about Poppet.

Now three years old - and fully grown - Poppet weighs in at a miniscule one pound and 14 ounces.

In comparison, the average female Chihuahua, which is classed as one of the smallest breeds in the world, weighs five to six pounds - but can go up to 10.

But little Poppet doesn't appear to be aware of her petite nature. Mrs Barnes said: “If we are out on a walk she won't think twice about barking at Great Danes and Alsatians. She has no fear whatsoever. I'm not sure she knows how small she is.

“We forever get people coming over when they see her wanting to stroke her. She's a star.

“However, she is very much a daddy's girl at heart. She will choose sleeping on his lap on the sofa over a bit of steak any day.”

She added: “You would think it would be slow going when I take her on a walk, but she's fast when she wants to be.

“If she's on a lead she will motor. I'm the one having to keep up.”

Update: Since this story was written, another dog has been confirmed as the world's smallest. Milly is just 3.8 inches high, and weighs half a kilo, roughly 1lb 1oz.
