Forfars worker stops Brighton lorry thief by sitting on him

A bakery worker has been hailed a hero after he dragged a lorry thief from a moving vehicle and then sat on him for five minutes until police arrived.

The dramatic incident unfolded after Chris Drew spotted the man jump into the driver’s seat as it was about to be loaded with bread and cakes.

The lorry careered through two crash barriers with the tail lift dragging along the ground as it weaved around the industrial estate grounds in Brighton.

Mr Drew, who is in his 40s, chased after the lorry, pulled the keys from the ignition and dragged the man out of the vehicle.

He and two of his colleagues then restrained the man by sitting on him until police officers arrived.

Mr Drew, dispatch manager for Brighton-based Forfars bakery, was at the company’s depot at Home Farm Business Centre in Moulsecoomb, Brighton, at 5.30am on Saturday when the incident happened.

Sussex Police confirmed a man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of assault, theft of a motor vehicle, drink driving and dangerous driving. He was released on police bail until February.

The loading and unloading of vehicles with the keys left in the ignition is a big no no. I hope health & safety practises are re-viewed as a result of this!

Crumbs, this story takes the biscuit! I hope his employers give him more dough for his selfless actions? This attempted robbery was a half-baked idea anyway.

The thief is probably thinking 'should have gone to Greggs'.

The theif will probably sue him for assault and in all seriousness, he could win. You're not allowed to do things like this these days in our namby pamby society.

I say good on you Chris but take the keys out of the ignition next time :-)

I read the previous story and then read your comment. It was so obvious that your comment was not intended for that particular story. So you've been reprimanded.....jeez

sometimes the keys need to be in to allow the tail-lift etc to work. if that is the case, then the door key should be removed and kept apart, so the vehicle can be locked. well done for spotting this potential tea-leaf, and keeping him for the police. he will only get a slap on the wrist, though, as nothing was actually taken.

Not at all, you are allowed to use reasonable force, and being sat on seems pretty reasonable to me.
If he'd have thrown on of their cornish pasties at the thief, well then that would have been a serious assault.
Well done for having a go, and more people should do it.

He obviously wanted to have his cake and eat it, and probably felt that being stopped really took the biscuit. Maybe he was two sandwiches short of a picnic or maybe he just failed to use his loaf....
