Brighton bus driver on the road after shedding stones to fit in his seat

A former newsagent shed three stone after being told he was too heavy to drive a bus.

21 stone Sean Morgan, 44, from Seaford, impressed bosses at Brighton and Hove Buses after applying to become a driver with the firm.

But under new guidelines set by manufacturers of bus driver seats, those sitting behind the wheel need to be under 19 stone or the seat could collapse.

That spurred Sean on to meet the challenge of shedding the pounds and he lost three stone in eight weeks after going on a diet of pasta and fruit.

Sean has now been driving buses for about two months and said it was worth the wait.

In September The Argus reported how drivers weighing more than 19 stone faced being moved to another department unless they lost weight.

The order came following a warning from manufacturers of bus driver seats who said they could break if heavy drivers sat on them.

Brighton and Hove Buses said they offered about half a dozen bus drivers help with losing weight.

Roger French, the managing director of the firm, added that they were doing “alright”.

So he lost a couple of stone, big deal.Bit like a junkie who kicks the habit,we're supposed to "super respect" him and he's portrayed as a super hero.Where as in fact,he's a bit of an idiot for getting involved in the first place.

About the same ratio as drivers then!

No-one says you are supposed to "super-respect" him (whatever that means) but surely even the biggest misanthrope can recognise and applaud an acheivement such as this?

Well said kkj.

It's rare we have a positive news story and this is one of the few. What a shame some people want to twist it into something that it clearly isn't.

So a morbidly obese person of 21 stone, now weighs just 18 stone.

That gives him a BMI equivalent to that of a Pork Scratching.

Well done Sir.

i wouldn't disagree with that either. some give all of us a bad name! strangely enough, some of actually enjoy the job, as we tend to be left alone most of the time. as long as we turn up on time, take over on time, and do the job to the best of our ability, we have an easy time of it.

Surely the issue of driver fitness should be a matter of company policy, dictated by medical evidence, as opposed to the maximum weight capacity of the driver's seat.
How could anyone in a position of responsibility believe that a guy who weights 18stone is fit to drive up to 55 passengers around in what are extremely stressful driving conditions.
The guy is a heart-attack waiting to happen.

What about overweight passengers?????????? Do they just take a chance that their seat won't collapse?

No you just move all the other passengers to the other side to balance the vehicle. Well done to that driver though. Perhaps the diet will become routine and he'll shed more.
