Bevendean woman finds time capsule from 30 years ago

LOOK INTO THE PAST: Jill Elliott with the time capsule LOOK INTO THE PAST: Jill Elliott with the time capsule

When Jill Elliott began tidying her garden, the most she expected to find was a few rotting shoots and leaves.

But digging at the bottom of a tree, the homeowner stumbled across a root into her property’s past.

For the glass jar buried at the bottom of her garden in Auckland Drive, Bevendean had been buried by previous occupants 30 years ago.

The crumpled documents, believed to have been written by teenagers, talk about life in 1980s Sussex.

While some things have changed during this time – Albion were fighting relegation from football’s top tier – others have not – as the country readied itself for a royal wedding.

Jill now plans to record her own thoughts and bury the two documents in the same spot for her predecessors to discover.

The scroll, which was buried in April 1981, was inside a glass jar.

It was written in red ink on a typewriter and signed by Martin Andre Buckman and Gary James Homewood.
