Nick Cave offered driver training after Hove speed camera smash

Singer Nick Cave has been offered driver training as an alternative to prosecution after crashing into a seafront speed camera, sources said today.

The 53-year-old musician was behind the wheel of a Jaguar saloon when it collided with the speed camera and a roadside barrier on December 7 last year.

The crash happened at 7pm on the eastbound carriageway at Kingsway in Hove close to where Australian-born Cave lives.

No other vehicles were involved and Cave was not arrested. The singer and his twin 10-year-old sons, who were also in the car, walked away unharmed from the crash.

Sources said today that Cave - frontman of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - has now been offered a place on a driver training improvement scheme.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "The driver was voluntarily interviewed by police and a decision was made to offer him a place on a driver improvement scheme as an alternative to prosecution."

Photographer Darren Cool, 26, who witnessed the aftermath of the crash, said he instantly recognised the driver as Cave.

He said: "When I first saw the speed camera, I thought it would make a decent weather picture because the conditions were icy at the time.

"Then I saw Nick Cave stumbling around in and out of the car and started taking some pictures.

"He looked pretty shaken up by the whole thing."

Wags scrawled "Nick Cave waz ere Xmas 2010" on the bent speed camera, which belonged to the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership.

A spokeswoman for Cave declined to comment.

Who? Never heard of you, but good on you for decking the camera..
I could think of a few more ugly bits of street furniture to have a go at next time you are out driving eg The totally useless monstrosity sprouting out of Coronation Green in Shoreham. For those that don't know it is the little patch of dog poo covered grass immediately to the west of the footbridge across to the Beach.

Never heard of him but if his singing is as bad as his driving, it is not surprising.

You haven't heard of Nick Cave?
He's a jolly fine vocalist in a popular beat combo.
I can recommend The Boatman's Call or Abattoir Blues for the new listener, His earlier offerings are possibly a bit hard going for the untutored ear. They fixed the camera last week, so i hope it catches lots of speeding motorists again.

As the government has now decided cameras cost more than they generate then Nick should be commended for doing his bit to reduce the nations deficit. Perhaps that's why he got no points or fine.

Other local celebs take note, you have nothing to lose but your no-claims bonuses.

I have no idea who he is either :)

How on earth did he manage to crash into the camera in the first place?!

Still not fixed...

Everybody slowed down for it any way. So it didn't catch speeding motorists only ones who were new to the area and were unable to spot a massive fluorescent box in the middle of the road.

Are you talking about the sign prohibiting right turns into Church Street for traffic coming from the Brighton direction. If so, I agree, as few people either see or obey it. In the few minutes I waited at the bus stop this afternoon, 3 people effected the prohibited turn.

Nick Cave's name came up over the weekend . . . Saturday would have been Michael Hutchence's birthday - Nick Cave sang at his funeral.

Those of you who don't know who Nick Cave is, are demonstrating your ignorance of modern, popular music.
Just for starters, the man has had a hit duetting with Kylie Minogue, and also composed the music for the critically acclaimed film 'The Proposition'.
He's pretty good - but obviously not that good at driving!

Can't help wondering if they'd have offered training if he'd hit another vehicle or a pedestrian instead of just a metal pole..
Dont know the way things work where he comes from - but the idea here is pay for some lessons to get thru the test BEFORE getting into a Jag..

Are you confusing Shoreham with rules?
The two really don't make good bed partners - How do you put a wink on this?!!

Yes I am ignorant of modern popular music (though have sat next to Kylie on a flight!!)
I would appreciate your advice of where to go in Brighton to hear good modern music - no massive speakers and huge amps, just good quality music, of any kind.

Well, Komedia have a good selection of all sorts of music on - most of it not too loud, and generally from the more thoughtful end of the modern music spectrum.
Justin Currie (for example) is on this Friday. Ex Del Amitri singer/songwriter. Great songs, and a fine singer. I'm going!

Fixing the camera today - no longer do we need to fear the carnage on our streets. Well for the few feet monitored by the camera anyway.

Presumably he'll be renaming the band 'Nick Cave and the case of bad driving'
