Thought you knew Sussex? Think again. From the Downs to the coast this is a county of contrasts, from Rye in the east to Chichester in the west the landscape and architecture is unmistakable and
distinctive. Sussex towns tend to be small and characterful and the villages picturesque, with lengthy heritage’s. Hastings and Lewes are two of the first fortified towns built by the Normans
after 1066. Ushering in a new age of culture, record keeping and architecture, their legacy is all around us. Before them the Romans smelted iron here and built fabulous palaces such as the one at
Fishbourne, with it’s amazing mosaic-tiled floors. Of course the most famous palace in Sussex is in Brighton. The Royal Pavilion helped turn a sleepy fishing village into the fashionable resort
we know today and may even be responsible for it’s risque reputation. A favourable climate, one of the driest and warmest in the UK, helps to make Sussex the perfect place for outdoor activity.
From walking the South Downs Way to messing about in boats, this county really has it all. Take a look at the list of contents on this page to discover the breadth of interesting places to go and
exciting things to do that are just on your doorstep and discover Sussex once more.
