Brighton and Hove on alert as protesters prepare to invade

Brighton and Hove was today preparing for an invasion of thousands of protesters in what is expected to be the biggest demonstration the city has ever seen.

The Mayday march organised by peace campaign group Smash EDO is theoretically aimed at the Brighton-based defence manufacturer EDO MBM/ITT.

Thousands more people are expected to arrive in the city to aim their anger not at EDO but at firms across Brighton and Hove which campaigners say have links to it.

Business leaders spoke of their concern that small firms could lose trade because shoppers will steer of the city during the demonstrations.

But Smash EDO criticised Sussex Police for sending officers to stake out a meeting of the protest organisers yesterday.

A specialist team from the Metropolitan Police carrying cameras set up outside The Cowley Club in London Road, Brighton, to try to collect clues as to what could happen today.

A police spokesman said the unit had been used because of the organisers refusing to meet with senior officers before the protest.

He said: “This was to support police objectives of balancing a safe event with the rights of those who wish to protest.”

Smash EDO spokesman Andrew Beckett said: "Police were waiting outside the front and rear doors watching people go in and out while taking notes.

“This was yet another attempt to intimidate us."

The campaign group has refused to communicate with police over the planned demo and last night said it would not release the details of where the protest would be or how many people would be attending until the early hours of this morning.

At the same time police have refused to say how many officers will be deployed for the march or where they anticipate the hotspots to be.

Smash EDO published a map on its website of more than 30 businesses - including most major banks, American Express, McDonald's and Brighton and Hove City Council’s headquarters in Bartholomew Square - as a target list for demonstrators.

Yesterday those businesses were bracing themselves for possible attacks.

A McDonald's spokesman said it would be prepared for any problems at its restaurants in Western Road, Churchill Square and London Road.

American Express and Lloyds TSB said they would also be tightening up security in case their sites were targeted.

Paul Hills, the managing director of EDO MBM, said the factory in Home Farm Road, Mouslecoomb, would have heightened security in place for the protest.

There are fears traffic will be brought to a standstill if the march means roads are closed unexpectedly.

At the Smash EDO protest last October, Lewes Road was shut causing chaos for drivers and bus passengers.

Roger French, the managing director of Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company, said: “We are able to organise appropriate diversions if we know what is going on in advance - as was the case with the children’s parade on Saturday.

“In this case we don’t know what’s going on, which is unfortunate.

“You have to remember that while thousands want to take part, thousands more don’t and they still need to be able to go about their normal Bank Holiday.

“We are working closely with police and are now wired up to a live CCTV camera so we can divert buses as soon as roads are closed.

“If somewhere like Western Road, North Street or Lewes Road shuts we have planned diversions along the seafront in place.

“We’ve brought in extra drivers and buses to ensure we maintain our service.”

Tony Mernagh, the chief executive of the Brighton and Hove Economic Partnership, said struggling small businesses in the city would be the victims if protesters caused a disturbance.

He said: “The police have said they are not anticipating any violence. We are advising businesses that it should be business as normal.

“We have to make the distinction between disruption and violence and we don’t believe the protest group will want to create violence in the city centre. That would go against what they are trying to achieve.

“There will be some anti-capitalists among them but we expect it to be peaceful.”

Smash EDO can hardly complain that the police are intimidating them by being outside a meeting given their refusal to give the police the protest deals. Every other protest has to do that, they are showing their arrogance and contempt for the people of Brighton, by refusing to do so. Had they co-operated with the police they may be able to argue it, but having done so they have vacated the moral high ground!

(Oh and watch out everyone, here comes Maggie!)

Whilst there were a few bad incidents at the G20 protests, I think most of the police acted professionally in the face of blatent intimidation. In my opinion, I think most of these people that are protesting today are wanting to stir up some trouble that they weren't able to fully get at the G20, and that's why they are refusing to co-operate with police. Demonstrate at EDO, yes, but by protesting at the other targets, they are simply trying to cause trouble and disruption.

From a police perspective I would be worried about the safety of some of the protestors.
Yesterday I walked into Brighton at about 3pm and there were large numbers of extremely drunk, young men outside numerous pubs shouting at motorists and shoving each other about in the usual Bank Holiday drinking sessions.
I can see a few of these lads being up for a punch up with the out of towners.

simon195 - Most people would realise that dr-dougals' cynical post was 'tongue in cheek'.
Hope you enjoy your bank hol outing and get home safely - I'll be staying at home (to avoid the protest clashes).

Yeah, the people of London, Crawley and the rest of the A23 and A27 corridor have their own SMASHBRIGHTON every bank holiday. And I don't think they're protesting against the building of weapon systems in our city.

Thanks for your comment. I was not being disrespectful in anyway to anyone who had died, ok. I also believe they were heavy handed in London - i was merely adding in a little bank holiday HUMOUR. Try it sometime! World might start to become a slightly better place.

“We are working closely with police and are now wired up to a live CCTV camera so we can divert buses as soon as roads are closed.
Does this mean the Bus Company has access to the towns CCTV system?
If so who controls it and what safe guards are in place.

Who are EDO- the people behind the organisation? - they state that it is their democratic right to protest . Is it not ours to know their identities ?Why do agitators at demonstrations cover their faces? - a handkerchief does not protect you from anything- if you believe in a cause- stand up for your rights openly and without fear- that's democracy

whoosh there we go.. another comment blown up out of proportion.

It says *a* live CCTV camera, not the town's CCTV system.

There are other cameras around too you know.

To Steeleysmith:

No, EDO are the weapon making company.

Also why do the police obscure their own ID numbers when going into these kinds of demos?

And remember, 90% of the people on this march will just want to carry out their peaceful, lawful protest. The other 10% are just as nutty as 10% of holiday makers who cause trouble in the town every weekend. They just take it out among innocent people, rather than McDonalds, RBS etc..

Look again and you'll see him laughing and trying to walk in front of the cops

Totally spot on !!! yes everyone has a right to protest (EVEN THE POLICE)but why cause so much disruption and mayham on what shoul dbe a great family holiday day..this has nothing to do with lawfull protest.. this has much to do with a very real and sinister campaign to destroy Law and Order in this nation and replace it with a new Dark Age !

I am not surprised at the conservative contingent here in Brighton. Having been born and bred in Brighton this influx of wealthy Bourgeois only seeks to whittle out the Bohemian heart of Brighton which I think is now sadly dead.
Listening to a wealthy family in a pub talking about how they were planning to buy another property in London while on another table people were worried about jobs clearly provided me with a classic example of how the pubs, attitudes and people in Brighton are now more like Surrey conservatives than the greater 'left' leaning of real Brightonians over the years. After being sniped at by the father of this family (who is a day trader, and to which he wanted to tell everyone in a very loud voice how much stock he was dealing in) in the pub as being ‘not a local’ and taking his ‘favorite spot’, I feel my anger burning at these usurpers of Brighton who’s money and attitudes are killing its creative heart.
Police powers have now gone too far, liberty and your rights are at threat, but for the Daily Mail (and Argus Readers) images such as those on this website and the coverage will only fuel anger at what are a small minority of people who are doing what many of us are too hypocritical or scared to do.
So I guess you people didn’t realise that the Bankers have caused more damage to this country than any terrorist has ever done, they are the one’s who are traitors. Over half a trillion debt, and they walk scot free. Get your priorities right and don’t believe conservative backed newspapers, go see for yourself.

Let's hope so. It might put a few people off coming.
The kettling technique used by the Met traps hundreds of people who are not involved with the demonstrations. People going home from work or shopping. People going to a concert or the theatre.

That is why I would never go to London now, unless I have to.

Introduce kettling to Brighton, and the visitor numbers will drop. Then what is going to happen to this economy so dependent on tourism?

Sadly, I do have to go up to London on Friday, where there is an illegal anti-war demonstartion planned. I just hope I can do what I plan and then get back safely.
