Three Brighton May Day protesters released on police bail

Three protesters arrested during yesterday's May Day anti-war march in Brighton have been released on bail.

One man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, a second on suspicion of obstructing police and another on suspicion of criminal damage.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman confirmed all three had been released on police bail pending further inquires.

Speaking after the protests yesterday Chief Supt Graham Bartlett, Brighton and Hove City Commander, said: “We will continue to investigate the other offences that have occurred and where possible bring those responsible to justice.

"Once again I urge those who wish to hold demonstrations in the city to abide by the law and notify the police of their intentions in advance so that jointly we can plan a safe but visible event which respects their right to protest and others rights to go about their business free from intimidation and violence.”

Chloe Marsh, from group Smash EDO which organised the march, said at least 30 protesters had reported injuries sustained during the day.

Only 3 arrests beggars belief! If there were a load of drunk teenagers running amok through town im sure they would have all been knicked. Maybe the police didnt want to get too close to the soap dodgers for fear of what they might catch

Wrong there, I'm afraid.

The last report of drunken teenagers running amok was the one the argus described as a near-riot which happened outside some club or other during/after a teenager's birthday bash - again three arrests...

Sussex police seem to have a fairly poor arrest record when it comes to riots or real trouble.

Sadly, too much time seems to be spent on policing trivia - for example, the recnt case of the old guy done for drunken driving of his mobility scooter, which was thrown out by the courts as no such offence existed - obviously no one told sussex police.

During the protest referred to here, we again see a toothless sussex police, unable to make arrests/decisions.

personally, I think this is down to the force's incompetent senior managers as opposed to any failings on behalf of the officers on the ground.

As I've repeated said, sussex police, needs a major overhaul and it's about time we got a police force as opposed to something with all the might and ferocity of a bunch of football stewards..
