Reaction to the Smash EDO funeral march

As the dust settles on yesterday's Smash EDO funeral march through Brighton, reaction has started on the blogosphere.

Brightonian Dan Wilson compared this protest with ones he had been on in his youth, and found the Smash EDO demonstration lacking.

He said: "The demos have been for causes various. I was against apartheid and shutting Brighton’s St Luke’s Pool (aged 9) in the 80s. I passionately opposed the CJB/CJA and French nuclear tests and other things in the 90s. More recently I’ve opposed student tuition fees and the Iraq war. I could mention direct action against fox hunting and car rallies on the South Downs. I even joined my mum to protest about midwife pay once.

"But I never hid my face.

"Protest is about standing up, being open, speaking out, hopefully raising the profile of the cause or issue, and being counted. For me, a protest doesn’t have to be legal but it must have peaceful intentions. I know how demos turn out. With opposing forces of protester and police, sometimes it gets edgy and ugly. As a protester, sometimes you get arrested. Usually you don’t. But passion doesn’t mean aggression."

Blogger Superlative was so annoyed, he wrote an expletive-laden post slamming the protest.

Here's a clean quote from it: "Someone must have bought them a map or something, as last time it seemed they couldn't be bothered to walk the three miles up the road from central Brighton to where the factory is actually located.

"This time they managed to protest near and around the factory, but unfortunately they got bored after a while and decided to annoy the rest of the city by coming into the centre.

"Despite taking a different route home, I still had to take several diversions in order to avoid the places where the police were trying to hold them back. I was also unlucky enough to catch sight of a few of them, wearing black, faces covered and hoods up, looking not at all like the group of peaceful protesters they claim to be.

"Why did they need to come into town? No one in town CARED about their protest, all they did was annoy AGAIN.

"It stops even being about the protest after a while, and they instead just seem to enjoy trying to outwit the police and get to places the police don't want them to get to."

However, some of the protesters themselves also posted their accounts.

The Brighton Love Police posted this video on YouTube showing the protest from the start right through to the kettle in North Road.

One, a charity shop manager writing on My Vegan Blog said: "I attended the demo alone - though I briefly saw one or two acquaintances on the march - a first for me, and something I'd never have considered before. And despite my semi-isolation faced with a huge police presence, I didn't have the same tremulous fear as on previous demos. Perhaps it was just because I felt a bit more prepared, knowing what to expect now.

"After being released from a ridiculous kettle on North Street (about 30 of us, stuck in an area not much bigger than a pedestrian crossing), I headed to the Cowley Club for food, warmth and, most importantly, a toilet."

most pathectic waste of public money, it really is a shambles to have so many police sitting in wagons etc over such small number of protesters, no wonder this countrys going skint, they should be out on streets 24/7 making sure the public are safe and rounding up the vermin thugs and gangs etc that this country is shamely infested with

What a ludricrously patronising commentary on the video. If that's the level of intellect at a Smash EDO rally, I'm glad I stayed at home.

I hear they say it was a success because the company closed early. Well the snow or a broken boiler would be just as effective. So Smash EDO are as effective as a light covering of snow!

I would love to volunteer my time to protect the EDO premises next time there is a protest.

How can we go about arranging this?

Then we'll see what'll happen when a crusty tries to get past me.

We all remember the iconic image of the chinese student standing in front of tanks in Tienamen Square; some of us may remember the students fighting for racial equality in the States, and people fighting apartheid all over the world.
Look at the people in Iran risking their lives protesting for democracy.
All of these protesters have stood up and showed their faces despite their lives being under threat and really under threat.
I too have protested against apartheid and was photographed by special branch while attending some political protests in the 80s. Never, ever, ever would we have considered hiding our faces.
You may as well not protest if you really are not willing to nail your colours to the mast.

As an Albion fan I often have to put up with the perception that all football supporters are a bunch of thugs. Given that perception, how come hundreds ( many more than on the Smash EDO demo ) of football fans managed to demonstrate in a peaceful and family orientatied way. WE achieved our aims - a new ground. Smash EDO will NEVER achieve their aims if they insist in covering their faces with masks and carrying weapons - it makes them no better than the Israelis. And that's coming from someone who supports the people of Gazas cause - what I won't do is support a bunch of thugs intent on trouble and too stupid to hold an intelligent demo.

Jesus, the bloke in the video made himself come across as a right fool, as do the rest of the smash EDO mob. It's a shame as at it's heart it's a cause alot of people really believe in (not including myself for a number of reasons, but I fully support their right to disagree), but the way they go about things just makes themselves look like idiots.

Like somebody said earlier, the Albion fans got what they protested for peacefully, a word that smash EDO don't seem to understand.

When Albion fans protested they didn't get a High Court injunction taken out against them to try to stop their protests and totally disrupt their lives. Thankfully the EDO protesters won and weren't frightened away as Sussex Police and EDO no doubt thought would happen. We will continue our battle until we close them down even if it takes another 6 years.

Lord Bassam if I recall had some sort of responsibility for war.

We, the Albion fans, conducted our demos with co-operation of the Police. If you actually obeyed the law you wouldn't have got a court injunction. Not difficult but something beyond Smash EDOs intelligence.

They dont care who they are 'protesting' about. If EDO shut tomorrow they would just move on to another target. Its all about causing trouble, organised by middle class anarchists in The Cowardly Club.

I fail to understand why this multi-national company hasnt moved the operation to some small African/South American country where the residents are too busy trying to exist to go on state sponsored 'protests' ?.

This smacks of NIMBY-ism masquerading as an eco/peace protest.....or just an excuse to rage against the machine.

Half of them are probably the same lot that campaigned against Shamrock farm and dont give a moments thought to the fact that that firm just relocated to Spain where animal welfare doesnt have a great name.....was that a triumph ?

The demo seemed a success to me.It was on the local tv news and lots of people who saw the demo didn't know what it was about untill told so that's more people educated about EDO and what they profit from.I would also like to point out that the demonstrators didn't smash up Brighton which many of the posters on this site were convinced would happen.

And what reason would that be - being a smug, total a-hole perhaps?
