Temperatures to hit -10C as week of snow falls on Sussex

Sussex is to be hit with more than a week of heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures.

Council teams and highways officials were last night preparing to step up operations as temperatures across the county plunged below -3 degrees centigrade.

Some weather forecasters are predicting temperatures could drop as low as -10 degrees by the end of the week.

The Met Office yesterday warned heavy snow showers were expected to fall across the county from tonight until as far ahead as next Tuesday.

Snow fell in East Sussex over the weekend and there were brief flurries in Brighton and Hove and West Sussex.

But as much as 20cm of snow is predicted to fall in Sussex overnight and through Tuesday, with further falls of as much as 15cm on Wednesday.

Panic buying saw some stores cleared of goods at the weekend.

Send your pictures of snow to picture.desk@theargus.co.uk or text them to 80360 with the catchline SUPIC.

I keep waiting for this snow to start, they said at the weekend, now it's Tuesday but so far nothing but clear skies and sun albeit a wee bit nippy!

The Met Office does predict snow for the next day or so, but clearly says (at the moment) that it will be mainly light except for the far east of the south east (Kent) Where did the amounts of 20cm and 15cm come from? If thats the case, then I do hope the HEAVY SNOW symbol does not appear on the Met Office site for Brighton - would that mean 30-40cm! Yikes.... :-)

If the argus is going to make sensational claims such as 15 to 20cm of snow expected you would think they would have the sense to reflect this in their weather forecast (which says "light snow" on Tuesday, much the same as all other forecasts are saying)

Quite right, ecw. I wonder if Anna Roberts knows where the local weather forecast is, in the Argus or does she know there is a forecast at all. I prefer to look on the Met office website for as true a picture that you can get. I have just had a delivery from a company in Haywards Heath and they have had no snow yet, but I do know it was snowing in Seaford yesterday.

The snow yesterday in Seaford was more like dandruff.

My Mumknows someone who works ar the Argus and she says that most of this is written in Southampton which is why they do not know they Alfriston from their Fulking Loose Bottom near Falmer.

Snow is notoriously difficult to forecast. You'll see a forecast saying no snow, or slight chance of snow, and you'll wake up to a foot or more of it.
And then you'll hear a blizzard is on its way, and get nothing.
I treat the weather forecasts around this time of year as pure speculation.
No weather forecast for more than 24 hour is worth taking any notice of anyway, no matter what the time of year!

Right I expect to see 25cm of snow by Wednesday Mr Argus, so I won't get to work. Are Brighton + Hove gritting every road in anticipation. Who are the Argus weather forecasters Mystic Meg and a couple of her cronies ?
Useless cr*p as usual but compelling reading when you need a laugh.

Just think what conditions would be like if it wasn't for global warming!

This only goes to highlight how poor the reporting is by the Argus (and that the reporters are not even local!!).
The minus 15 degrees in by weather reports is for Scotland......just to let you know Anna that Brighton & Hove is not in Scotland!

Well, we've woken up to 1/2 a centemeter this morning in Brighton. Where's the rest of it then?

It's not that difficult, Ballroom Blitz. The Met Office has had it pretty much right in the last week. Snow tends to come from fronts and troughs - just like rain. While there are heavy snow warnings in force for all the south-east the detailed forecasts for Littlehampton and Shoreham show mainly light snow at any time during the day. Which is what was forecast, accurately, for last night.

You tend to find that when it snows heavily, there are more sightings of UFO's reported; and thats REAL life assurance!

Panic buying. What are we going to need that is so essential over the next week or so that we don't already have?

If The Argus is so certain these snow storms and blizzards and coming this week or next then why is their own weather section forecasting a little bit of light snow then mostly cloudy with clear spells and drizzle?
