Brighton and Hove

Primary schools

Bevendean primary School is staying open until 3.15pm. If concerned about collecting children safely parents are welcome to pick them up early. After school clubs and Groovy Gang will not be running. Due to faulty heating nursery will not open tomorrow.

Cardinal Newman Catholic School is closing with a staggered release of students

Cedar Centre - primary department closed at 12.30pm Coombe Road Primary School asked parents to collect their children at 1pm.

Hangleton Infant School and Hangleton Junior School is open.

Peter Gladwin Primary School - children have been going home from 1pm but the school is open for children who cannot go home until 3pm.

Our Lady of Lourdes is open but children can be picked up early.

Rudyard Kipling Primary School and Nursery closed after 1pm.

St Mark's Primary School will remain open but parents have been able to pick up their children from 1.30pm

St Mary Magdalen's Catholic Primary School and Nursery is open until the end of the day but children can be collected early

West Blatchington Primary school closed at 1pm.

Woodingdean Primary School closed at midday.

Cedar Centre - secondary department will closed at 1pm.

Varndean School closed at 12.45pm

Varndean College closed at 1.20pm. Tonight's parents evening has been cancelled and there will no adult education classes.

7.51am - These schools in East Sussex have been confirmed OPEN: Blackboys Church of England Primary School - breakfast club child care is only from 8.15am.

Fletching Church of England Primary School, Uckfield, will try to open from 10am.

Newick Church of England Primary School will open at 10am to give staff a chance to get into school. Children are asked to wear their own clothes, wellies and come appropriately dressed.

Parkland Junior School, Eastbourne, is open as usual but may close at 1.30pm if conditions deteriorate.

Seaford Head Community College will be open from 10am due to adverse weather.

Staplecross Methodist Primary School, Robertsbridge, is open but people are asked to wear wellies.

More information about school closures Schools have clear guidance on both school closures due to severe weather and informing parents and guardians.

We understand that school closures pose an inconvenience to parents, but the safety of pupils, staff and visitors is of paramount importance.

Closing a school is never an easy option. They should remain open wherever possible, with closure always considered as the last resort and every effort made to give adequate notice of closures to parents and guardians.

Before making the decision to close, head teachers undertake a rigorous risk assessment and decide if there is significant risk of severe injury, ill health or inability to comply with relevant legislation. A decision is taken on the basis of weather forecasts and on-the-spot observations and this is why closures are often decided on the morning itself.

Although concerns have been raised that schools may be more liable for prosecution if they choose to stay open during severe weather and an incident occurs, head teachers base decisions to close on a risk assessment and not on the fear of compensation claims. As long as schools do what is reasonable to ensure the health and safety of visitors and staff it is unlikely that the school would be found negligent.
