Sussex snow day 3: transport

Buses

Buses have now been fitted snow chains and the following services are now running - but all will finish by 8pm tonight:

Service 1 between Portslade (Battle of Trafalgar) and Arundel Road running about every 15 minutes. Buses are starting at Arundel Road/Roedean Road (facing east) and then operating via Marine Gate and along the Coast Road to Old Steine because Eastern Road and Edward Street are still impassable.

Service 2 - operating between the Holmbush Centre and Old Steine, but via Carlton Terrace instead of Olive Road. Buses will be running every half an hour at 00 and 30 minutes past each hour from each end.

Service 5 between Patcham, Black Lion on the A23 and Palmeira Square about every 20 minutes.

Service 6 between Sainsbury's Benfield Valley and Brighton Station via the Hangleton Link Road. Unfortunately we are still unable to serve Downs Park or Foredown Drive. Buses are running every half an hour departing from each end at 10 and 40 minutes past each hour.

Service 12 will be operating as follows: at 4pm, 4.20pm, 4.40pm, 5.40pm, 5.50pm and 6pm Churchill Square to Newhaven South Way, and 4.51pm, 5.11pm, 5.31pm, 6.21pm, 6.31pm and 6.41pm Newhaven South Way to Churchill Square. Unfortunately we are unable to serve east of Newhaven Town Centre at the moment. There will be no further journeys after the above on this service today.

Service 25 is operating every 15 minutes between Palmeira Square and Falmer Station. Buses will not serve either Sussex University or Brighton University Falmer campuses, stopping outside on the A27 instead.

Service 46 between Portslade Station and Old Steine only: departures from Portslade at 04 and 34 minutes past the hour and from Old Steine at 03 and 33 minutes past the hour.

Service 49 between The Avenue Shops (by Manton Road) and Portslade Station running about every twenty minutes.

Trains

Southern has suspended its Brighton mainline service. Other services spluttered into life as far as East Croydon at about 10am, but the Brighton line has been suspended all day - and at 5.12, it apparently gave up hope of running trains along it, saying: "Despite our best efforts today, the Brighton Mainline remains suspended."

Southern's other Sussex services have been running hourly between Lewes and Brighton non-stop, Lewes and Eastbourne with one stop at Polegate, Eastbourne and Brighton stopping at Polegate and Lewes and Chichester and Littlehampton. They will now end at the following times: Eastbourne to Brighton - 1900 Brighton to Eastbourne - 1950 Littlehampton to Chichester - 1830 Chichester to Littlehampton - 1900 Brighton to Littlehampton - 1845 Littlehampton to Brighton - 1855

First Capital Connect says there will now be no Brighton trains today, but hopes to have twice-hourly trains running tomorrow, with all stops from Gatwick to Brighton.

Roads

Conditions are treacherous, and abandoned cars are adding to the problem. We will post major updates here, but also check our live traffic updates.

East Sussex County Council said there has been about 30cm of snow across the county overnight.

A council spokeswoman said highways teams have been ploughing throughout the night.

She said: "Our priority will be to focus on the main routes and we will continue to plough throughout the day, but the forecast is for continued snow showers."

They are advising people not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

Air

Gatwick Airport is closed until at least tomorrow morning.

I agree.
mad sparks - try reading the reports. The information is there. If you were going off on holiday wouldn't you be interested whether Gatwick was shut or not? Think about other people. Not everyone has chosen to stay in this country.

I am a little disappointed that there is not more drivel from the fire brigade or stories about corrupt Police Officers or ones being let off serious charges. Still, there is always tomorrow!

What happened to the Highways teams in West Sussex last night?

Travelling home from work from Chichester to Worthing at 11.00pm and only one gritter/plough was out and that was down a small country lane where it wasn't needed, meanwhile the A27 was thick snow and treacherous with Arundel at a complete standstill with trucks stuck everywhere at the bottom of the hills. The whole situation was a joke and appalling. What do motorists pay their hard earnd cash for?

Yes "Dave at Home" a fine detailed report IN the argus NOT written by them! A trying day, great that some bus`s ran but frustrating that workers were left at stops while the pensioner next to me was going to buy stamps for her Christmas cards! Ho!Ho!Ho!

The Brighton Bear says...

I thought that it would be obvious to check what buses were running before standing about at random bus stops?

dee57 says...
7:11pm Thu 2 Dec 10

people had checked what bus`s were running but OBVIOUSLY with only a few running they were busy so it was frustrating to know that for some, the journey was not essential.

Good time to get all the long term benefit scroungers out clearing the snow shopping for the old and infirm. earn your keep. Then the hard working tax payers who keep you, can get to work.
