Candidates lining up for Sussex police commissioner role

Would-be police commissioners are to fight it out for the chance to represent the main political parties in elections in Sussex later this year.

Members of the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats are being asked to choose who they want to become candidates for the post of Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner.

Elections are due to take place up and down the country in November for the £85,000-a- year commissioners, who will have the power to hire and fire chief constables and set police priorities and budgets.

In total at least 21 people are already understood to be vying for the role, with at least 14 people applying for selection as Con- servative candidate.

Labour councillor Godfrey Daniel, a Labour member of East Sussex County Council and Hastings Borough Council, and of Sussex Police Authority, has declared he wants to stand for selection for Labour.

He said: “Labour needs a credible candidate with experience of policing and Sussex, who can make a real difference.”

Paul Richards, a former parliamentary candidate for Lewes, has already declared he wants to stand for Labour.

A regional spokeswoman for the party said a shortlist would be drawn up and members balloted by post.

Of the Conservatives, Coun Peter Jones, leader of East Sussex County Council, and Coun Paul Dendle, of Arun District Council, who is also the party’s area chairman, have publicly declared themselves.

Sussex Police Authority’s Conservative chairman, Steve Waight, who sits on Worthing Borough Council and West Sus- sex County Council, has confirmed he is among the applicants.

Nicholas Soames, MP for Mid Sussex, is involved in drawing up a shortlist of candidates in May, before rounds of interviews and hustings in June and a ballot of party members in July.

The Liberal Democrats have invited members to come forward and are preparing to hold a ballot if the selection is contested.

It is understood the party is expecting to field a candidate in Sussex.

Brighton and Hove’s Green party met on Wednesday to discuss whether to put up a candidate for the elections. It is understood no decision has been made.

Street pastor and community activist Ian Chisnall has already announced he wants to stand as an independent candidate.

Anthony Kimber, a former military officer who has lived in Rye for ten years, has also declared he will stand, as has Matt Taylor, of Moulsecoomb, Brighton, of the one-man SOS Party, and another independent, Philip Jones.

I'd like to nominate Caroline, Ben, Bill or Jason. They'd decimate the Police service thus saving us millions. Crime would rise mind but they don't mind that.

PCC MATT TAYLOR'S THREE POINT PLAN TO TACKLE CRIME IN SUSSEX

Following the historic election on November 15, 2012, as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Sussex, Matt Taylor reports his three point plan to tackle crime in Sussex.
1, To microchip criminals.
By implanting criminals with a microchips, Sussex Police will be able to tackle crime with a revolutionary crime busting tool. With the minimum of monitoring, Sussex Police would know the location of every criminal in Sussex. Placing a suspect at the scene, goes along way to making sure the Perp does time.
2, Legalise Drugs
It's a small price to pay for getting extra benefits in the long term. Burglaries, muggings, theft, fraud will all be significantly reduced, reflecting free and
Legal drug distribution. The medical benefits can rock the pharmaceutical industry to the core. Curing Cancer and many other ailments.
3, One police officer per 100 persons rule.
Getting back to basics, more police. The role of a police officer is to prevent crime, to detect crime and ultimately to punish those who commit crime. A happy compliant Sussex will reward the police with the respect and esteem they need to really be part of the community.

They cut back policing yet create a £85,000 a year post....just to hire and fire chief constables, set police priorities and budgets.
More money wasted sat behind a desk.......while crime rises.

Bah, these people don't know the first thing about Policing... Dreadful waste of money and time. My vote goes for Yogi Bear, he's better qualified.

This was sold as being a bold and exciting initiative. Elected police commissioners were supposed to bring forward people from a non-partisan background who could bring a fresh insight, impartiality and awareness into the management of our police forces. But what have we here? We have the same old local government politicos looking for the same old quango non-jobs. There are a couple of fringe candidates but the politicians are already forming up along dreary and discredited party lines. Who seriously wants to vote for local government time-servers like Messrs Jones, Waight, Daniel and Pendle or thinks that they’ll make a ha’porth of difference. They’ll just be placemen for the policemen and on £85,000 a year too, thank you very much.

Lets remember what Nick Herbert said, ”The first set of elected PCCs will be pioneers, driving through changes in relatively uncharted territory. These are big roles for big figures. So, we need dynamic leaders, community champions, pioneers and entrepreneurs to consider standing for this office. They need not be politicians and they could be independent of political parties. What matters is that they should have experience, character and real leadership qualities.”

I have a fantastic chance to win.
Let's think about this....
The police don't want Police Commissioners. It is an ill-thought-out idea from the Tory party to politise the Police.
It'll cost more and create more confusion. Putting more power in the hands of politicians to dictate what and how the Police conduct their business.
I have every chance to succeed because I am TOTALLY independent of any political party.
Remember this is the first time Police Commissioners have been introduced in the UK. There is no precedent.
I have been a police-man. A Royal Military Policeman. I am the only person with police experience to stand in the Sussex election.
Specifically to Sussex, anyone who stratches the surface will uncover numerous allegations of corruption. I have stratched very deep and see there are serious questions that haven't been answered.
I am the only candidate brave enough to expose the corruption in Sussex Police.
This will win me the election.
Most people have no idea this election is even happening. Once I am seen debating the points with the other candidates, I am confident my passion and determination will come to the fore-front.
Watch this space, and let me assure you, I have the best chance to win, thank you very much.
By the way, please take the time to reply to my post. Your comments are greatly appreciated and I trust I'll have your vote on November 15th 2012.
