Emergency services at the scene at the junction of Queens Park Road and Elm Grove today
A man has died after a lorry collided with parked cars.
Emergency crews were called to the junction of Elm Grove and Queen's Park Road, Brighton at about 11.30am today (Thursday, January 5).
Witnesses said a lorry collided with a number of parked cars, including a camper van.
Firefighters said one of these vehicles had been shunted into a house and then ruptured a gas main.
A police spokeswoman confirmed a 62-year-old man from Ashford, Kent, was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious injuries.
A statement issued at about 2.45pm confirmed the man had died.
A police spokeswoman said: "Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and the Coroner's Officer has been informed."
Earlier officers established a cordon of about 200 meters in Queen's Park Road but said traffic disruption was minimal.
A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "A wall of several houses has been damaged in the collision, causing damage to the gas mains.
"East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and the gas board attended and police assisted with the evacuation of six houses in the interest of public safety."
Officers were also working with the local authority to arrange temporary accommodation to those residents affected.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 579 of 5/1.
