Man who killed student in Hastings kebab shop race row jailed

KILLED: Mohammed al-Majed was attacked outside a Hastings kebab shop KILLED: Mohammed al-Majed was attacked outside a Hastings kebab shop

A 22-year-old man who killed a teenage Arab student following a racist row in Hastings was jailed for four-and-a-half years today.

A judge said George Austin and his two co-defendants were a "terrible advertisement to the youth of this country" following the death of Mohammed al-Majed.

George Austin describes to police how he punched Mohammed al-Majed.

Austin's single punch sent 16-year-old Mohammed, from Qatar, flying on to the pavement, where he cracked his head and suffered massive head injuries.

The teenager died in hospital three days after the attack outside a kebab shop on the seafront on August 22 last year.

Austin, who was convicted of manslaughter following a three-and-a-half-week trial at Lewes Crown Court last month, showed no emotion as he was sentenced.

Austin's co-defendants, Paul Rockett, 22, and Alexander Quinn, 19, were found guilty of racially aggravated common assault and wounding with intent respectively.

Locking up all three, Judge Anthony Scott-Gall told them that Mohammed's life was "needlessly and senselessly snuffed out by an unforgivable act of violence".
