Church has plan to get more funds

AN 800-YEAR-OLD parish church has launched an appeal to raise funds for essential repairs.

The News Shopper reported last month grade A listed St Mary Magdalene, in Cobham, needs another £95,000 towards its £360,000 restoration programme.

Now the church has started a 5M campaign, St Mary Magdalene Massive Millennium Makeover.

This will get it official launch at the Harvest Festival celebrations on October 7.

The Rev Steve Davie said: “Everybody has been very generous but this is an ongoing campaign.

“The first phase of the restoration work started on Monday and if, by next summer, we haven't reached our target, we could be struggling.”

English Heritage gave the church a £195,000 grant in March and money has been raised by other sources, including the Friends of Cobham Church.

The group is holding a fundraising “safari dinner” on Saturday, October 13, with all money going towards the 5M appeal.

Anyone who would like to contribute an original recipe or offer help towards the appeal should call him on 01474 814332.
